Area residents are invited to participate in a walk-a-thon and golf outing.
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation is launching a two-pronged attack against the disease in the form of a walk-a-thon and a golf outing to be held as major fund-raising activities.
The walk-a-thon has been dubbed "Great Strides" and will be held Sept. 8 at Boardman Township Park. It will begin with registration at 9 a.m. at the Edgewood Pavilion. Participants may also register online at www.cff.org/rainbow.htm or by calling Kelly Hopton at (800) 368-2150.
The walk will get under way at 10 a.m., and afterward there will be a party with food and beverages.
The 10-K event will feature Youngstown-area corporate walk teams that will be pitted against each other in a friendly fund-raising competition. Groups from schools, organizations and individuals will also form groups to participate in the 6.2-mile fund-raising walk.
Prizes are awarded to the walkers turning in the most money.
Also planned: The "Great Strokes" golf outing will be a four-person scramble to be held for men and women Sept. 22 at Pine Lakes Golf Club in Hubbard. Play will be limited to the first 20 teams to register. The entry fee is $75 per person and includes a cart, golf, lunch, refreshments and a steak dinner.
Registration will begin at 11 a.m. with assigned tee times starting at 11:15. The day will include contests for closest to the pin, longest drive and a hole-in-one. The first place team will be awarded $300.
Support: Sponsorships are available for both events, and brochures may be picked up at any Key Bank location. Donations are to be collected prior to the walk date.
