Last year's record: 13-0 overall, 8-0 in Big 12, first in South. Beat Kansas State, 27-24 in Big 12 Championship Game, beat Florida State, 13-2, in Orange Bowl for the national title.

Returning starters: 14.

Key players: QB Nate Hybl (9-for-16 passing as backup to Josh Heupel), LB Rocky Calmus (125 tackles; consensus All-America), RB Quentin Griffin (783 rushing, 4.1 per carry, 16 TDs), DB Roy Williams (93 total tackles), P Jeff Ferguson (43.5 net yards per kick).

Pivotal game: Oct. 6 vs. Texas in Dallas.

Did you know: Sooners finished third in total defense in the Big 12 last season, trailing Kansas State and Texas.

Alumni will be happy if: Stoops can get OU past Texas again and back into the Big 12 championship game.
