NY-PENN LEAUGE Scrappers squeak out win over Tigers

Published: Thu, August 16, 2001 @ 12:00 a.m.

Dennis Malave and Kenton Myers had two hits each in a 1-0 victory over Oneonta.

ONEONTA, N.Y. -- Four Mahoning Valley Scrappers pitchers combined to shut out the Oneonta Tigers, scattering four hits in Wednesday's 1-0 victory in a New York-Penn League game at Damaschke Field.

Miguel Quintana scored the game's only run in the fourth inning.

Winning pitcher Marcos Mendoza was tagged for two hits in the five innings he worked.

Ron Colvard relieved Mendoza in the sixth inning, giving up one hit in his two-inning stint.

Mark Turnbow pitched the eighth inning while Chris Cooper didn't allow a baserunner in the ninth inning.

How they scored: Oneonta starter Kevin McDowell pitched well through the first three innings, but ran into trouble in the fourth. After Quintana lined a single to left with one out, McDowell walked Brian Kirby on four pitches. Then Kenton Myers pulled a single to left field to load the bases. McDowell struck out Curtis Gay for the inning's second out, but, on the next pitch, catcher Ross Garland couldn't handle a high ball thrown by McDowell and Quintana scored.

Dennis Malave and Myers each had two hits to lead the eight-hit attack. Josh Bard, Kirby and Francis Finnerty each added a hit.

Oneonta second baseman Juan Francia suffered a shoulder injury while making a backhanded stab at Malave's shot near the bag in the seventh inning. Francia's left arm was in a sling following the game.

Oneonta, fourth place in the Pinckney Division with a 26-27 record, could not get a key hit in crucial situations. The Tigers squandered opportunities to score in the fourth, seventh and eight innings.

The Scrappers improved to 17-38 and remained 201/2 games out of first place in the division.

The teams continue their four-game series tonight at Damaschke Field.
