ANNANDALE, Va. -- The 60th wedding anniversary of former Youngstown residents, Franz and Raymond Whalen, 7411 Galanis Drive, was celebrated in July with friends at an assisted living residence in Annandale.

Mr. Whalen and the former Franz Wilhelm were married Aug. 14, 1941, at St. Edward Church in Youngstown. Born and raised in Youngstown, they graduated from Rayen High School in 1933.

The couple have one son, Timothy Whalen of Arlington, Va., and a daughter, Polly Gatto of Vienna. There are also two granddaughters and one great-granddaughter in the family.

Mrs. Whalen, a homemaker, retired in 1979 from a gift shop in Houston, where she was a manager.

Mr. Whalen retired in 1979 after 43 years of service with Republic Steel and it's subsidiary, Republic Supply of Oklahoma. He also worked briefly in the circulation department at The Vindicator and served with the U.S. Navy.
