Registering new pupils
WEATHERSFIELD -- Registration for students new to the school district will be from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Wednesday. Pupils in kindergarten through fourth grade should register at Seaborn Elementary; grades five through eight, at Mineral Ridge Middle; and nine through 12, at the high school.
Bring birth certificates, immunization records, pupil's social security number, proof of residency, high school transcript, and if parents are divorced or separated, legal proof of custody.
Road will be closed
HOWLAND -- The intersection of King Graves and Howland Wilson roads will be closed from Monday until Friday, while a culvert that spans both roads is replaced. Motorists on King Graves Road should detour to state Route 46, Warren-Sharon Road and Henn-Hyde Road. On Howland Wilson Road, motorists may detour to Cadwallader-Sonk and Henn-Hyde roads.
Preschool open house
HARTFORD -- An open house at Hartford Helping Hands Christian Preschool is from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday. The school, in Hartford Community Church, 3312 state Route 7, is still registering pupils for the new school year. Call Debbie Riddle at (330) 772-5003.
Free school supplies
NEWTON FALLS -- School supplies will be given away from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday while supplies last. Children must attend the giveaway at the American Legion post on East River Road. 'Taste of Springfields'
MERCER, Pa. -- The Springfield Restaurant Group will be host to its second annual charitable event to benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation from 4 to 7 p.m. Sept. 17 at Springfield Grille on Pa. Route 19. The buffet-style dinner, "A Taste of Springfields," will feature creations from the restaurant group's six restaurants -- Iron Bridge Inn, Rachel's Roadhouse and Springfield Grille, all on Route 19, Springfield Grille in Boardman, Log Cabin Inn in Harmony, Pa., and Hickory Bar & amp; Grille, Hermitage. Tickets are $50 and include dinner, dessert, entertainment and a prize drawing. All proceeds, including employee tips, will go to the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Western Pennsylvania.
AirTran to end route
PITTSBURGH (AP) -- AirTran Airways announced it will end its three flights a day from Pittsburgh International Airport to New York LaGuardia Sept. 3 because of lack of customers, the Allegheny County Airport authority said. Authority Chairman Glenn R. Mahone said routes to Chicago, Philadelphia and Atlanta are doing well.
SALEM -- The 14th Annual Columbiana County Senior Olympics, sponsored by Clemente Ambulance, will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday at Salem High School. The event, open to all nursing home residents in the county, features competitions in bingo, basketball, spelling, bowling, shuffleboard, golf, darts, horse shoes, walking, wheelchair racing and softball tossing. The 14th annual event for Mahoning and Trumbull counties took place last week at Austintown Fitch High School. More than 480 participated, Spencer reported.
