From the region

Several area residents have completed military basic training. They include:

U Army: Pvt. Casey L. Daniels (Warren G. Harding High School, Warren '00), daughter of Candy Daniels, 1786 Oak St. S.W., Warren, and Glenn Daniels, Falls Street, Youngstown; Pvt. Ernest B. McCollum Jr. (Chaney High School, Youngstown '97), son of Ernest and Virginia McCollum, 1433 Republic Ave., Youngstown; Reserve Pvt. Renee L. Banting (Mohawk High School, Bessemer, Pa. '00), daughter of Paul Banting, 1664 Moravia Road, Enon Valley, Pa.; Pfc. Michael D. Paxson (Champion High School '96), son of Mitchell and Barbara Paxson, 5546 Chapel Hill Center S., Champion.

U Air Force: Airman Sarah L. Thomas (Austintown Fitch High School '98), daughter of Laura and stepdaughter of Clifford Duke, 1605 Mayfield, Youngstown. Her father, Vern Thomas, lives at 133 Four Mile Run Road, Austintown; Airman 1st Class Kevin J. Williams (Girard High School '95), son of Roger and Virginia Williams, 401 Joan Ave., Girard; Airman Tabatha A. Benge, daughter of Peggy and stepdaughter of Dave Ferneding, Somerville, Ohio, and daughter of Mike Benge, Youngstown; Airman 1st Class Andrew J. Montgomery (Champion High School '00), son of Mary Montgomery, 82 Larry Lane, Cortland; Airman 1st Class Rondell T. Earvin, son of Sabrena Earvin, 41 Wilmette Lane, Youngstown; Airman 1st Class Sean A. Mackey, a brother of Michele Davis, 2747 Draper St., Warren;

U Marine Corps: Reserve Pfc. Joshua A. Boorn (Bristol High School, Bristolville '00).

HONORS

East Liverpool native

Air Force Tech. Sgt. Ernest W. Jones graduated from the Noncommissioned Officer (NCO) Academy, where he was named a distinguished graduate. Jones is assigned to the 726th Air Control Squadron at Mountain Home Air Force Base, Idaho. He is the son of Grace A. Jones, 216 Summit Lane, East Liverpool, and graduated in 1982 from Beaver Local High School, East Liverpool.

From Jamestown

Army Pfc. David M. Veverka is a member of the Old Guard Fife and Drum Corps that performed at & quot;Fiesta 2001 & quot; in San Antonio, Texas. The corps, with headquarters at Fort Myer, Va., is the only unit in the Armed Forces whose dress and decor recall the Revolutionary War. He is a son of Ron L. Veverka, 35 Webster Drive, Greenville, Pa., and Carol L. Veverka, Fairfield Drive, Jamestown, Pa. He is a 1999 graduate of Jamestown High School.

Burghill resident

Marine Cpl. Jason R. Thomas (Joseph Badger High School, Kinsman '97), son of George H. and Ruth A. Thomas, 6241 Bradley-Brownlee Road, Burghill, received a Certificate of Commendation while assigned at Marine Corps Air Facility, Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii.

TRAINING

Army major

Army Maj. Paul R. Pfahler graduated from the Command and General Staff Officer Course at Fort Leavenworth, Kan. The 10-month training is the Army's senior tactical course that prepares midcareer military officers to serve as commanders and principal staff officers in large military units. Pfahler is an air defense artillery officer who has served in the military for more than nine years. His wife, Shannon, is a daughter of William and Susan Kane, 345 Lisbon St., Canfield. He is a 1992 graduate of Kent State University.

U Army Pvts. Youma S. Jones (Rayen School, Youngstown '00) and Nicole L. Hill (Rayen School, Youngstown '00) graduated from the unit supply specialist advanced individual training course at Fort Lee, Va. Jones is a daughter of Loretta L. Jones and granddaughter of Marylee Alexander, both of 136 W. Warren, Youngstown. Hill is a daughter of Willie B. Skinner, 2883 Randolph N.W., Warren, and April Y. Hill, Youngstown.

U Army Pvt. Jessica D. Mead (Sharon High School '99) graduated from the Patriot missile launching station enhanced operator/maintainer advanced individual training course at Fort Bliss, Texas. She is a daughter of Rebecca J. and stepdaughter of David S. Polonus, 332 Fourth Ave., Sharon.

U Army Spec. Timothy Hardgel has graduated from the U.S. Army Primary Leadership Development Course (PLDC) at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo. Hardgel is a motor transport operator assigned to Fort Leonard Wood. His wife, Cheryl, is a daughter of James and Ruby Cowan, 160 Bane S.W., Warren.

U Army Pvts. Yolanda S. Butler (Rayen School, Youngstown '00) and Jennifer L. Davis (West Branch High School, Beloit '00), graduated from the automated logistical specialist advanced individual training (AIT) course at Fort Lee, Va. Butler is the granddaughter of Myrtle A. Butler and daughter of Patricia L. Butler, both of Youngstown. Davis is a daughter of Jeanne M. Davis, 1270 Cedar Ridge, and Danny J. Davis, both of Salem.
