14-year-old in serious condition after tractor accident on farm

Published: Wed, August 1, 2001 @ 12:00 a.m.

LOWELLVILLE -- A 14-year-old boy was taken by helicopter to Akron Children's Hospital on Tuesday afternoon after a tractor accident on his family's farm.

Ben Mashburn, 14, of 4097 New Castle Road, Lowellville, was listed in serious condition this morning.

Poland Township fire reports say the accident occurred around 12:36 p.m. Tuesday, just after Mashburn had stepped off a tractor. Without Mashburn in the driver's seat, the tractor began to roll downhill.

Mashburn chased the tractor, which was towing a wagon, and tried to get back in the driver's seat.

The tractor then hit a tree.

The reports say Mashburn bounced off the tractor and hit both the front and back of his head. Fire officials think the wagon contributed to his injuries. Mashburn was taken by helicopter from the scene.
