Bus wreck nets driver citation

SALEM -- A city school district bus driver was cited after her bus hit another school bus in Portage County during a field trip.
Joan Wellendorf, 32, of 1740 Harrison Ave., was cited for following too closely, a spokeswoman for the Ravenna post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol said Wednesday. The case will be heard in Ravenna Municipal Court.
For the record: Wellendorf will continue to drive buses while the accident is being investigated by school officials, schools Superintendent Dr. David Brobeck said.
Wellendorf's driving record for the district is good, a school official said.
A patrol spokeswoman said Wednesday afternoon that a written description of the collision has yet to be entered on the official accident report.
Initial patrol reports said Wellendorf's bus struck the rear of another Salem school bus driven by Arthur Julian, 53, of 652 Stewart Road, Salem.
The accident occurred around 9:48 a.m. Tuesday on Interstate 76 in Portage County.
No children were seriously injured in the crash, although seven were examined and released from Akron Children's Hospital.
A group of nearly 340 pupils in grades 4-6 was being transported on eight school buses to an Akron Aeros baseball game when the accident occurred.
