Shedding more light on Wellington’s “stunt”
By Todd Franko on 12:19, 1/19/12Previous: How the NFL lost us .... | Next: UPDATE | Most 'Super' Bud commercial they did not use
The posturing has been interesting following Sheriff Wellington’s move to stop staffing city video arraignments due to budget issues.
Here’s our story today.
Here’s one email that arrived almost instantly the other day:
....Why doesn't the Vindicator "call out" Wellington on his new scam to get a budget increase. The Sheriff in Ohio has only 2 functions required. Maintain a jail AND serve court papers...that's it!!! He is doing what school boards do when they want to get what they want...cut sports or cut bussing. Wellington has plenty of people sitting on their asses. Detectives, road patrol, 38 people in office jobs, etc.,etc.,etc. In the old days we would shut everything down and do the 2 REQUIRED things when money was short. But not this idiot......and because of the Vindy he gets away with this....unbelievable!! Video arraignments save lives...hopefully no one gets hurt.
First consideration:
If video arraignments save lives and dollars, why aren’t all these instant county fiscal experts wondering why the county courts don’t use video arraignments? That’s right — Judge Krichbaum & Co. have all the inmates trucked over. So the video arraignment system exists at the jail only for city operations.
On the thought of city operations, Warren, Akron, Dayton are among the big cities in Ohio that pay its county for jailing services. Why does it not work for Youngstown?
You say no one in the county should pay for special county services?
Then please ask Canfield Township how much it pays to the county to have deputies provide road patrol services.
I’m not for or against any one county or city office over another. But I don’t mind pausing from the furor and just letting the numbers speak.
The jail’s budget numbers — from 211 closed jail cells to 110 less deputies to $12/hour inmate watchers — speaks volumes. Where do you find those comparable reductions in any other county operation — or even city operation?
For people to care now how Wellington spends is kind of amusing. No one cared when the jail spent less and cut services. Has anyone paused to wonder how the city’s summer murder spree might have been different had 211 cells been in use? Would a YSU student still be alive had his shooters been locked up?
Retired jail boss Jim Lewandowski told a tale once that went something like this: The brain and the heart got into a fight once, and each argued that it – not the other - was the more important function of the body. The lungs heard this and said “we are the air; we are most important.” The liver and kidneys partnered up and touted their overall significance, too.
Then the ass end tried to join the debate and cite how “most important it was to the system” — much to the chagrin of the heart, brain, lungs, kidneys and liver.
Insulted, the ass end decided to stop working, and all the other functions shut down. The jail operations have been the ass end of county operations in recent years, with funding that comes seemingly only when a federal court orders it.
So be it ...

Mr Franko -- As editor of the newspaper that has served the valley for all these years, perhaps you will give some thought to sharing such a less-than-elegant story only wth your burger buddies and not in a public forum again. The Vindy's sesquicentennial is not far off -- do it proud.

Wellington has finally done something positive for Mahoning County STEPPING DOWN. Why did we forget that he had the highest homicide rate in the history of Youngstown/Mahoning County while he was YPD Police Chief. He retired from his YPD Captains position while he was Chief so he could collect his pension and a chief's pay check for several years, but we forgot that. He ran for Sheriff and we did not elect him, the dem committee people put him in instead of having another election after the then Sheriff was indicted.
He sent out and sold Bar B Q tickets every summer since the last election and collected money for a campaign that now he says he will not seek. So did he raise this money for someone else to run?. Imagine that, he gives a friend a $68,000 dollar job to run for Sheriff. So taxpayers have to supplement another up and coming politician. Wellington has done a lot we seemed to have forgotten, maybe Dave Aey was not all that far off with his analogy of Wellington. And now he allows a current employee (JG) to recruit county employees for the campaign. I have several Deputy friends complain that they have been pressured to put signs in their yards or risk harassment at work Deputies are feeling the pressure while their "UNION" FOP 141 President TJA has been hanging with the Candidate. Brian Gooden GOOD LUCK -
I HOPE THE VOTERS WAKE UP AND BRING A REAL COP TO THE SHERIFF'S OFFICE. And cuts the shenanigans we have gotten use to with Wellington

i highly doubt a job was just given to someone. from everything i have been heard capt. jerry greene is the most qualified person in the department. if i recall he said he has been with the sheriffs dept for over 22 years. 68000 is not that much for 22 years of service. and today isnt like the good old days where if you did not back a certain person you were black listed. with the way contracts are written what possibly can be done to a public worker that doesnt jump on the bandwagon? sounds to me like your friends with another candidate and the aeys. brian gooden lost my vote when he never showed up to the democratic nomination. i like mr greenes ideas for the sheriff's department and its going to be nice to see a younger new face take over and build upon everything sheriff wellington has accomplished. And what am i missing, what is the problem with a union president hanging out with gooden? i must not know the rules. unless one of these others running can change my mind JERRY GREENE has mine and my families vote!!! good luck

I hope that he is not campaigning on taxpayer time. I think Goodin not seeking a nomination that was promised to Greene who had the early start with inside information that Wellington was not running is commendable. The problem is the Union President has put the Deputies he represents under the pressure that is they don't support Greene the Blacklist is alive and well and they all know it.
I also missed all the accomplishments of Wellington, and this latest stunt on the Video Arraignments is so political to try to make the Commissioners shift more money to the Sheriff's office. Where will the money come from and what will we lose to shift those funds.
The three candidates need to show me something to get my vote. Greene has is young, Goodin is a small township cop with experience, and Hughes is another Youngstown cop. Let's hear from them and see what they think for the County as a whole.
Right now Greene is the least qualified of the three, he worked the in the court house and was hand picked by Wellington, that is not enough.
We need some law enforcement experience in there that can keep the criminals contained and by making YPD utilize more manpower taking away from crime fighting to drive prisoners when the two deputies can move them in front of camera is wasteful and shameful to the rest of the county. Plus now all that video equipment purchased by taxpayers is collecting dust.

Good riddance to double dipping Wellington. He is exactly why the law should be passed in Ohio that it is illegal tho double dip. Now we got the ex police chief Jimmy Hughes trying to double dip and follow in wellintons foot steps. At least wellinton could spell double dip. The prison should be privatized. Hughes you ripped the taxpayers off enough. Get lost!

Double dipping by definition is collecting a taxpayer paycheck while campaigning for Sheriff. This is what Wellington is doing with Jerry Greene. Greene's picture is on YouTube in uniform with a county car (#68)campaigning for issue 2 (a worthy cause) but it shows the rules don't apply to him. Why should Wellington who pulls stunts to get more money from taxpayers/commissioners pay his crony $68 grand while he runs for Sheriff. While he cries broke putting other officers and citizens in danger. Gooden and Hughes need to speak up for the citizens of Mahoning County.

Please. Yea we didn't elect him sheriff. We elected Phil let's plant flour as coke Chance. If Chance is supporting Gooden. That's a bad sign. That's that whole garbage pale crew.

saw the video in question. why dont you take that picture from a little further back. you better be careful and watch who you accuse of doing what. everything you stated is slander so far. first off at no time can you tell who is in the video. also the signs say issue 4 not issue 2. and how can you be sure someone is on county time?
