A poll commissioned by the Ohio Newspaper Association reveals the extent of the Democratic Party's problems going into the 2010 statewide battle. Democratic Gov. Ted Strickland, who will be seeking re-election, as will other Ohio officeholders, would be scrambling to hold on to his job if the election were held today.
The poll shows that the race between Strickland, who is in his first term, and the presumed Republican gubernatorial nominee, John Kasich, is a toss up.
What does that mean? Trouble for the Democratic Party, which must not only hold on to the top spot in state government, but retain control of the offices of secretary of state, attorney general and treasurer, and try to wrest the auditor's post away from the Republicans.
In addition, the party has a challenge in its bid to win the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Republican George V. Voinovich because two prominent Democratic officeholders, Lieutenant Gov. Lee Fisher and Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner, are vying for the nomination. It could be a bloody primary, which would please the Republicans, who are determined to keep the seat.
All this is being played out against the backdrop of a national economic crisis that has already punished the Democrats in the governor's races in Virginia and New Jersey.
With double-digit unemployment, skyrocketing deficits, a growing national debt and a major divide in the country over health care reform, the Republicans are poised to make gains nationally — unless the economy turns around by next November.
And for that to happen, states like Ohio will have to open the floodgates for federal stimulus spending. It will be a test of the Strickland administration's ability get major projects off the drawing board.
Mahoning County Democratic Party Chairman David Betras is guaranteeing that Strickland will receive 80 percent of the vote cast in the county in the governor's race. But if the economy continues to sputter, many Democrats will stay home rather than come out and vote the ticket.
To be sure, a year is a lifetime in politics.

Betras can guarantee all he wants, Strickland will struggle to get 65% of the area. I supported Strickland in 2006 and there is NO WAY IN HELL I am supporting him in 2010.
I'd be willing to be 30-40% of the conservatives in our area backed Strickland in 2010 because of the GOP Choice of Ken 'Coingate' Blackwell

"To be sure, a year is a lifetime in politics."
In that case get back to us in a year...since that's when the actual election takes place. Am I right?

Your right Jeff, but here is just a sample of where your tax money is going, and EVERYONE SHOULD CHECK IT OUT.If the Democrats keep it up,it wont take much to paint all Democrats with the same brush.Check-safelinkwireless.com

I'm digusted with BOTH major political parties. The GOP had all three branches of government and all it did was borrow and spend. The Dems are going to tax and spend. Meanwhile our borders are open, our currency is being printed into worthless paper, we are still in two wars with no end in sight, but terrorists within our country and even in our military are fighting a Jihad against us right here.

Until a short time ago, I believed that the Democratic-Socialist Party would have a death grip on political power nationally and perhaps statewide. They've grown the government-dependent voting block who faithfully vote for those that flick them a few crumbs from a bountiful table.
However, after the DSP controlled Congress has voted a series of high tax, anti-jobs bills (Pelosi"care", the failed porkulus spending bill and Cap-and-Tax), targerted and villified US citizens and businesses (Humana, Fox News, Talk Radio, Sarah Palin, Ken Starr...) like the easily-angered powerful government that they are, and exploded the deficit, the people have risen in opposition in great numbers.
What the DSPs need to understand is that people realize that when you raise taxes, you are seizing their property. When you raise taxes, you are closing the only door they have to a better way of life. People have begun to see the government as a powerful force that can take their earnings at will, much like an armed thief.
Relax DSPs, you've enslaved enough folks through entitlements that your fiat is probably safe, but I'm not as certain as I used to be.

The state will return to it's GOP majority in short order. Governor Stricknine has shown his true colors and it ain't what the people wanted for this state: Higher taxes, high unemployment, and gambling.

Pro American, We have been COMPLETELY BETRAYED by BOTH God-less political parties, and you have pin pointed some of the most obvious areas of PURE BETRAYAL...
"I'm disgusted with BOTH major political parties. The GOP had all three branches of government and all it did was borrow and spend. The Dems are going to tax and spend. Why would the democrats in mahoning county choose Dave Betras as their chairman? The guy is part of the problem. He will lead the democrats to self destruction. I for one will vote (I) because I think he is a loose cannon.

No, I didn't. I bet you spent a few hours researching, though...sorry for the mix-up.

Gov Strickland will be held accountable for what's happened in Ohio's economy
- whether he is responsible for it or not
- whether he has the ability to improve it or not.
Miserable position to be in.

ProAmerican, and do you think the Republican party is the party of the One World Order aka New World Order, one without borders, primarily because of the cheap labor the New Order would provide, such as the Republicans diligently work towards with Bush/Cheny?

If Pelosi, Dewey, Cheatum & Howe continue to have their way in Washington, The voters may not wait until 2010 to oust the Dems- They should be charged with crimes against the citizens of the United States.

Pelosi hasnt been shown to have been appointed to the office by a court short circuiting the electoral process and implanting the probable loser of the election so that we could then be lied to and taken into war. Sky-you Repugs make me sick. Your type got its head handed to them in the election-thats all. As Scalia would say--Get over it.

Jessiedavid, I have nothing but comtempt for the GOP as well I do for the Dems, and I agree with you.

ProAmerican, I know our political views are similar, and that's why the questions in my previous post are sincere.
Though in different ways, Both political parties are guilty of taking part in bankrupting our Government, to further reach and manipulate their self serving agendas/goals.
On another important subject.... I was told by a family member, Tim Ryan stated recently, (maybe today), that "Our freedoms need to be redefined." And that his statement created a lot of anger. ....Does anyone know if that information is accurate?

Saddad, if you're referring to Bush in 2000; he won fair and square. The Dems were the shameless cheaters. Remember when Kerry attempted to discredit our service peoples, absentee ballots, I do? Remdmber when the Dems working the Florida polls attempted to stop black GOPs from voting, I do? Remember when the Dems bused homeless people to the polls, I do? Remember when the Dems attempted to register felons, homeless and illegals to vote, I do?
I'm not a Rebublican but I'm glad they make you sick. Take a Tum.

Saddad- I don't vote the party, I vote the PERSON.
I just happen to agree with Steve La Tourette(R) & John Bocieri(D) on the healthcare issue and you will note that there's one of each there.
In case anyone is interested, there were two excellent articles in the weekend edition of the WallStreet Journal.
One by Peggy Noonan ( who was an Obama Supporter) discussing how the President's current direction is not what Americans are looking for. She analyzes where he originally place the emphasis of his vision which helped his popularity with the voters and his new emphasis on healthcare which is not making him popular.
The second by Betsy McCaughey discusses some important aspects of the House version of the healthcare reform package. I know my eyes were really opened when I read it!

SkyKing, Thank you for the reading recommendations. The over the top left wing radicals like Obama and Emanuel are so scary and inept that their comrade type health care absurdities they make puppets like Tim Ryan try to push down our throats, are actually pushing themselves right out the White House's front door, and back to where they came from, and back to doing what they are somewhat qualified to do, by being "Yes we can.", local Community Advisors.
