Jones helps Wilson top Mooney
Howland and Poland kept pace in the Metro Athletic Conference race.
YOUNGSTOWN Phillip Jones hit a layup with 1.2 seconds to go to lead Wilson High to a 55-53 win over Mooney in a boys basketball game on Tuesday.
William Johnson led the Redmen (4-5) with 17 points, while Raylin Poindexter had 13 points, Montell Scott had 12 points and nine rebounds and Lamar McQueen scored 11.
Tim Marlowe had 13 points, four assists and four steals for Mooney (1-7), while Dan McCarthy had 12.
Canton Timken 68, Chaney 40
YOUNGSTOWN William White, Deanus Bolts and Paul Tarver scored 20, 12 and 11 points respectively for Timken.
Tremaine Alexander and Andre Ballinger each scored nine points for the Cowboys (1-10).
Chaney trailed just 26-20 at the break then Timken scored 42 points in the last 16 minutes.
Howland 61, East Liverpool 53
EAST LIVERPOOL Jared Kirin had 17 points and nine rebounds to lead Howland (3-6, 2-1) in a Metro Athletic Conference game. Nathan Cope added 16 points, while Nathan Solter had three steals and Drew Guito had five assists.
Tony Metsch had 18 points, while Joey Wines added 14 for East Liverpool (1-6, 1-2).
Poland 68, Struthers 45
STRUTHERS The Bulldogs (7-1, 2-1 MAC) rushed out to a 22-5 lead after the first quarter and were in command 38-21 at intermission.
Chris Lovell scored 17 points for the Bulldogs, while Anthony DeFelice added 15 and Ben Umbel had 11. Andy Sepsey led the Wildcats (4-4, 0-3) with 10 points.
United 59, Crestview 56
HANOVERTON After trailing 12-2, the Eagles (4-4, 3-2 ITCL Tier One) rebounded for the win behind Brandon Kekel's 21 points and 12 rebounds.
Bill Prosko scored eight points for United while McCavitt Carter and Jimmy Phillis had seven each.
For the Rebels, Andy Kestner scored 18 points and Todd Unkefer had 11.
Lowellville 57, Jackson-Milton 48
NORTH JACKSON Mario Nero led the Rockets to victory by scoring 19 points in the ITCL Tier Two game.
Jeremy Gruber scored 14 points while Zach Matisi netted 12 and pulled down 11 rebounds.
For the Bluejays, Nik Kaley scored 23 points.
