LOWELLVILLE The first Korey Stringer Community Fund Golf Outing will be on Sunday at Bedford Trails Golf Course.
The event, named after the late Minnesota Vikings lineman and Warren native Korey Stringer, will raise money for a community service organization in honor of one of the area's hometown heroes.
Kevin Stringer, Korey's brother and president of the Korey Stringer Community Fund, announced this week that several outstanding celebrities will be taking part in Sunday's event.
Former NFL and Ohio State standout Robert Smith, currently an ESPN commentator, will be present along with local boxing sensation Kelly Pavlik.
Stringer also said that two former Minnesota Vikings players, Dwayne Clemmons and Jay Walker, also have committed to take part in the tournament.
"We are raising money to fund events like the Korey Stringer Football Camp and many other projects are in the works to improve the community, empower people that live here and fund programming that supports the entire Mahoning Valley," Stringer said.
"Korey touched so many people and made so many people in this community proud," Stringer said. "My family and I know we are honoring his wish to take the good fortune he was blessed with and give something back to the community where he got his start."
Died in 2001
In 2001, Korey Stringer died from heat stroke after a preseason practice with the Vikings. He was several times an all-pro selections with the Vikings as an offensive tackle.
He also was an All-American at Ohio State University and led Warren Harding to a football state championship.
The Korey Stringer Football Camp, now it its second year, is a comprehensive one-day camp that is free of charge for boys in grades 3 through 8.
NFL players and Ohio State players volunteer their time to teach the boys team-building and techniques of the game. They also organize a full game for the participants to play at the camp's end.
Local businesses have donated T-shirts, snacks and meals for the camp participants.
With the money raised from the golf outing, Kevin Stringer said he hopes to eventually expand the popular camp beyond one day and to allow more participants.
For more information about the golf outing, contact Wanda Benbow (330) 399-2228 or Lynn Grischow (330) 536-2234.
Teams are scheduled to check in Sunday at 1 p.m. and there will be a 1:30 p.m. shotgun start.
