YOUNGSTOWN Since the end of the regular season, Rayen High football coach Brian Shaner knew he was likely to be named the head coach at the new East High.
But that didn't keep him from breathing a sigh of relief when it was made official on Wednesday.
"It's a tremendous weight off the entire staff's shoulders," Shaner said. "It went from being a burden to an excitement in a matter of 24 hours."
Shaner still must be formally approved at the Youngstown board of education meeting on Jan. 2, but all signs point to his hiring. Rayen and Wilson will consolidate into East next school year.
Two titles
Shaner has a 19-18 record in four years with the Tigers, leading them to back-to-back City Series titles.
He said he has already started thinking about next fall.
"The sooner we do this, the better," Shaner said. "We're coming up with a plan to make sure this is a successful transition."
Since the city has not yet finalized the district boundaries for next school year some students at Wilson will attend Chaney Shaner isn't sure which players will be on his roster next year.
"At the present time, they're working on it," said Ed Matey, who oversees athletics and physical development for the Youngstown City Schools. "The decision will be made through the superintendent's office."
Shaner plans to involve the Wilson players in his offseason conditioning program, even if some of them will be playing for Chaney next year. Longtime Cowboys coach Ron Berdis resigned on Wednesday, leaving Chaney without a coach for the time being.
Chaney factor
"I think we need to let Chaney play a role in this whole thing, too," Shaner said. "But even if the kid isn't ours, at least he'll be lifting weights and preparing for wherever he goes."
Shaner plans to invite Wilson coach Brian Marrow to join his staff. Marrow has coached the Redmen the past three seasons.
"We'd love to have him," said Shaner, who said he has had informal conversations with Marrow. "He's a community icon and a heck of a football coach."
Rayen athletic director Marco Marinucci will become the AD at East.
"That was very important because he's been a big reason for the success at Rayen," Shaner said. "If it wasn't for him, a lot of good coaches and a lot of good kids would have left the city."
In other news, Rayen senior wide receiver Tomaz Hilton, an all-Ohio selection this year, has received four scholarship offers from Division I colleges: Cincinnati, Kent State, Bowling Green and Miami (Ohio). National signing day is in February.
