Liberty needs overtime to defeat Struthers
The Leopards remained unbeaten with the 81-72 victory.
LIBERTY Mychal Doblanski and Jason White each scored five points in overtime as Liberty surged to an 81-72 victory over Struthers Tuesday night to remain undefeated in high school basketball.
Matt Kukura sent the game into overtime for Struthers when he sank two foul shots with 3.3 seconds left in regulation to tie the score at 67-67.
Then in overtime, the Leopards outscored the Wildcats, 14-5.
Doblanski finished with 29 points, nine rebounds, five steals and five assists, while White had 22 points with six assists and Ryan Gillum chipped in with 16 points.
Kukura led Struthers with 23 points, including a perfect 10-for-10 from the foul line. Josh Vlosich added 14 points with 11 rebounds, Keith Karas 13 points with six assists and R.J. Ragan 10 points. Matt Wilson grabbed 12 rebounds.
Ursuline 64, Akron Hoban 59
AKRON D'Aundray Brown scored 33 points and led Ursuline to its third straight victory against Archbishop Hoban.
Ryan Burton added 17 points for the Irish (3-0).
Hoban (1-2) trailed the Irish by 10 points after three quarters 47-37, before rallying to close the gap in the final quarter.
Fitch 48, Girard 43
GIRARD Jon Stockman scored 15 points to lead Fitch, which shot 9-of-14 from the foul line in the fourth quarter to hold on.
William Jones added 13 points for the Falcons (1-2), who trailed 18-6 at the end of one quarter.
Marty Brinker had 13 points and Brett Cubellis had 10 for Girard (1-2).
Campbell 47, Lakeview 45
CAMPBELL It was a game of two different halves. Lakeview (2-2), which took a 17-3 lead in the first quarter, led 25-15 at intermission.
Campbell (2-1) still trailed 34-32 after three periods, but outscored the Bulldogs 15-11 in the final quarter.
Ryan Burt sparked the Red Devils with 15 points and Jermaine Richardson chipped in with 14. Mark Novotny led the Bulldogs with 15.
Champion 62, Maplewood 48
BAZETTA Joe Cvengros scored 17 of his 19 points in the second half as Champion rallied from a 33-23 halftime deficit.
Katrell Jones had 15 points and 11 rebounds for the Flashes (2-1), while Tyler Kish had 15 points.
Mike Hillman scored 16 points for Maplewood (1-1), which outrebounded Champion 25-10 in the first half and finished with a 39-32 edge on the boards. Chad Fenstermaker and Marty Urchek each added 10 points.
Western Reserve 63,
Jackson-Milton 36
The Blue Devils (2-0, 1-0) broke away from a close game to outscore the Bluejays (0-4-0-2) 34-14 in the second half of the Inter-Tri-County Tier contest.
Dave Drevna sparked Western Reserve with 15 points. Mike Nagy and Matt Shields led the Bluejays with 12 and 11 points respectively.
The Blue Devils out rebounded the Bluejays 21-11, with Western Reserve's John Porterfield, Chris Truitt and Chris Tofilski each grabbing four.
Crestview 61, Mineral Ridge 57
MINERAL RIDGE The Rebels (2-2, 2-1 ITCL) built a 34-27 lead by halftime and the Rams (0-3, 0-2) couldn't catch up.
Todd Unkefer and T. Gustafson scored 15 and 14 points to spark the Rebels. Nick Dominic and T.J. Bevilacqua each scored 14 points for the Rams (0-3, 0-2).
Leetonia 48, Lowellville 42
LEETONIA Senior Corey Rauschenbach scored a career-high 21 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead Leetonia over Lowellville in the first Inter-Tri-County League game of the season for both teams.
The win gave the Bears their first 3-0-record start since 1989.
Jon Williams and Jake McNally each added nine points to reinforce Leetonia, while Josh Selway contributed four points and as many assists.
Mario Nero scored 20 points to lead Lowellville, which was in its season opener.
Springfield 80, East Palestine 65
NEW MIDDLETOWN The Bulldogs (0-1, 0-1), in their season opener, weren't much of a match for the Tigers (1-2, 1-0) in a Inter-Tri-County League Tier 1 opener.
Bobby Rogers scored a team-high 22 points for the Tigers. Travis Foreman led the Bulldogs with a game-high 27 points and he grabbed 10 rebounds.
United 47, Lisbon 39
LISBON The Golden Eagles (2-2, 2-0 ITCL), trailing at intermission 27-23, limited the Blue Devils (0-4, 0-2) to 12 points in the second half to prevail.
Bryan Phillips paced United with 14 points. Arlan Bailey paced the Blue Devils with 10 points.
Lake Center 54,
Youngstown Christian 51
YOUNGSTOWN Lake Center (3-0) held a 34-31 lead after three quarters and held on to post the victory over the Eagles (0-2).
Thomas Laver and Evan Ferwerda sparked Lake Center with 20 and 19 points. Anthony LaGamba led the Eagles with 11 points. David Colbert grabbed eight rebounds.
Poland 84, Chaney 49
YOUNGSTOWN A total of 14 Poland players got into the scoring act to lead the Bulldogs' romp.
Lou Coppola led the way for Poland with 18 points while Anthony DeFelice and Chris Lovell added 11 apiece. Lovell and Ben Donlow each had five rebounds while Ben Umbel added nine points with four assists and four steals.
Chaney's new gym dedication is set for Saturday between the girls and boys games. The girls game will start at 6 p.m. followed by the boys game at 8.
LaBrae 58, Southington 52
LEAVITTSBURG Cory Hinzman collected 14 points, Mike Ryan 13 with eight rebounds and Eric Hart 10 points with seven assists to spark LaBrae (3-1).
Drew Tietz had 22 points for Southington.
Late Monday
COLUMBIANA William Johnson had 24 points and eight rebounds, Justin Bryant had 16 points and Lamar McQueen had 10 points and seven assists as Wilson defeated Heartland Christian Monday, 82-53.
Raylin Poindexter added 10 points for the Redmen (2-1).
For Heartland Christian, Kyle Knepper had 15 points and Nate Hall had 13 points.
