Boardman wins big in PONY Zone game



The Champion Marlins won Warren AA League's deciding game.

DAVIDSON, N.C. — Danny Dougherty's bloop single over the first baseman scored Tyler Blangero with the game-ending run with two outs in the bottom of the sixth as Boardman's 14-year-old all-star team beat North Mecklenburg, N.C., 14-4, Friday in the PONY East Zone tournament.

Blangero singled to reach base, followed by a hit by Mark Calautti before Dougherty pushed across the run that decided the game via the 10-run rule.

Carmen Tarantino had a home run and three singles while Johnny Fithian had two hits and a pair of RBIs for Boardman, which entered Friday night's game against New Bedford, Mass., with a 2-1 record.

Warren AA

WARREN — A seven-run second inning was all the Champion Marlins needed in beating Mahoning Valley Knights, 8-4, for the Warren Class AA League championship in Packard Park.

The Knights had a 2-1 edge in the series before the Marlins won the final two games at MacGregor Field.

In the title game, winning pitcher and MVP Mark Jackson worked five innings in relief of Aaron Johnstone. In the best-of-five series, Jackson was 2-0 with a 0.78 ERA.

Lance Townsend had a triple, double and single for the champs while Eric Nachreiner added two hits. Travis McCartney and Tom Popadak had two RBIs apiece.

For Mahoning Valley, Brian Daugherty had three of his team's nine hits while Torrie Frangiamore's two hits netted three runs.
