Delta adds flights
for Ohio State fans
COLUMBUS Delta Air Lines Inc. has created two nonstop flights to Phoenix to make it easier for Ohio State fans traveling to watch the Buckeyes play in college football's national championship game Jan. 8.
Delta, the biggest carrier at Port Columbus International Airport in terms of flights and No. 2 in passenger volume, doesn't usually fly nonstop between the two cities.
"We're thrilled to support the overwhelming request from our customers for convenient nonstop service to the BCS championship game," said Bob Cortelyou, Delta's vice president of network planning. Both flights leave Jan. 6 and return Jan. 9. Coach fares have been running about $1,000 per ticket before taxes and fees.
Southwest Airlines Inc. also has added nonstop flights on those dates, but many seats already have been sold.
No. 1 Ohio State (12-0), which takes on No. 2 Florida (12-1) in the title game, is seeking its second national championship in the last five years.
Bengals cornerback
charged with DWI
AMELIA Cincinnati Bengals cornerback Deltha O'Neal was charged with driving while intoxicated early Saturday after being stopped at a traffic checkpoint.
The two-time Pro Bowl player had a blood-alcohol level of 0.10, above Ohio's legal limit of 0.08, the State Highway Patrol said. O'Neal was alone in his car and arrested at the scene, Sergeant Kevin Long said. O'Neal took a breath test and was released,
He is to appear in Clermont County Municipal Court on Dec. 12. The seven-year veteran is the eighth Bengals player arrested this year. Rookie receiver Reggie McNeal was charged with resisting arrest this week outside a Houston nightclub.
Bengals spokesman Jack Brennan said Saturday he was unaware of this latest arrest. The team withholds comment on unresolved charges against players, he said.
Pettitte explains
Yankee signings
HOUSTON Andy Pettitte says he moved from Houston back to New York because the Yankees put on a "full-court press" and the Astros showed signs they were ready to move on without him.
Pettitte and the Yankees reached a preliminary agreement Friday on a $16 million, one-year contract, a deal that reunites the two-time All-Star with the team he helped win four World Series titles.
The deal includes a $16 million player option for 2008 that Pettitte's agent, Randy Hendricks, said Pettitte would not exercise if he were hurt and unable to play.
Many fans in Houston had hoped Pettitte would extend his three-year stay with his hometown club. Pettitte and Hendricks said they offered to play for the Astros for $14 million, but that the Astros would offer no more than $12 million and balked at the second-year option.
Pettitte said Saturday he was surprised the Astros wouldn't bridge the gap between the two proposals.
"It shocked me that (the Astros) would not continue to go up, when the Yankees continued to push and push and pursue and they (the Astros) really didn't do much," he said. "It was a full-court press by the Yankees. I've talked to the guys, and obviously they wanted me to come back up there."
Houston was on the verge of obtaining pitcher Jon Garland from the Chicago White Sox earlier this week for outfielder Willy Taveras, pitchers Taylor Buchholz and Jason Hirsh, a move Pettitte said made it clear the Astros had written him off.
"You've got to figure that was a pretty good sign that they were going to move on," Pettitte said in a news conference at the Battleground Country Club. Pettitte's defection to the Yankees intensified speculation that close friend, former Yankees and Astros teammate Roger Clemens, would join him in back in New York. But Pettitte said he had not talked with Clemens about his decision.
"I haven't talked with Roger one time during these negotiations," Pettitte said.
Sweden takes lead
at World Cup
ST. JAMES, Barbados (AP) The United States made seven consecutive birdies to end the front nine, vaulting up the leaderboard. Wales finished its day with five straight, and Scotland strung together four in a row to put itself into contention.
Still, they're all looking up at Sweden and Argentina entering Sunday's final round of the final World Golf Championships event of the year.
Welcome to a suddenly close-knit World Cup, which seemed destined to be an Argentine runaway at one point before the leaderboard turned into one giant cluster at Sandy Lane. Sweden (63) rallied to finish Saturday 16-under par and with a one-shot lead over Argentina (67), with Scotland (65) another shot back.
After the Scots, it's a seven-way tie for fourth at 11 under with Wales (62) and the U.S. (63) making big third-round moves to get into that cluster, along with Italy (64), Mexico (65), Spain (67), South Africa (67) and Germany (68).
"I think it might be a dogfight tomorrow," said Stewart Cink of the U.S. If not for Cink, the U.S. seeking its first World Cup since 2000 probably wouldn't be included. Cink had five of the seven birdies during the Americans' big run to end the front side, a burst that started when J.J. Henry drove the green at the downwind, 353-yard third hole, two-putting from about 70 feet.
