Despite rough start, Rockets tops Bristol
LaBrae and Champion lost Division III games, while West Branch won in Div. II.
WARREN Mike Hillman scored 21 points and the Maplewood High boys basketball team rebounded from a slow start to pull away from Bristol, 58-43, in a Division IV sectional opener at Warren Harding High School on Wednesday.
Hillman scored 10 points in the fourth quarter as the Rockets (14-7) outscored Bristol 25-17 in the final period.
Luke Clay added 12 points for fourth-seeded Maplewood, which trailed 21-20 at halftime.
Eric Maraczi scored 12 points to lead Bristol (2-18).
The Rockets will play Cornerstone Christian at 6 p.m. Saturday.
Cornerstone Christian defeated Newbury 64-57 in the other game.
Burton Berkshire 63, LaBrae 62
KIRTLAND Nick Burzanko scored 21 points to lead Berkshire, which did just enough to hold off LaBrae in a Division III sectional opener at Lakeland Community College.
Ben Hess added 13 points for Berkshire, which shot 63 percent from the field (26 of 41).
Mike Ryan scored 24 points and grabbed nine rebounds for the Vikings, who held a 48-46 lead entering the fourth quarter.
Eric Hart added 17 points and Jeff Morgan had 16.
Gilmour Academy 74,
Champion 66
Tyler Brodhead made five 3-pointers and finished with 27 points to lead Gilmour, which led 55-48 entering the fourth quarter.
Kevin Komperda added 20 points and five rebounds, while Andrew Gustauson had 10 points and three assists.
For Champion, Tyler Kish had 15 points, six rebounds and five steals and Joe Cvengros added 15 points. The Flashes shot just 36 percent from the field (24 of 67).
West Branch 51,
Akron Springfield 50
CANTON Jake Woods scored 13 points, Kyle Rockwell had 12 for West Branch in a Division II sectional at the Canton Fieldhouse.
Vic Pappas and Alex Stull each added 10 points for the Warriors (14-7).
