ST. LOUIS — Senior tailback Marcus Mason was named Gateway offensive player of the week.

Mason rushed for 266 yards on 20 carries and had three touchdowns in YSU's 35-28 victory at Western Illinois.

His 95-yard TD run was the longest in school history and the second-longest in Gateway history. His total of 266 was second in school history to Dick Adipotti's 304 in 1966 against Southern Connecticut State and was the fifth-best in Gateway history.

Illinois State linebacker Kye Stewart was named defensive player of the week and Northern Iowa placekicker Brian Wingert was special teams player of the week.

YOUNGSTOWN — A new elevator will be in use for the first time at Stambaugh Stadium for Saturday's homecoming game against Northern Iowa. The elevator is located at the south end of the stadium, near the corner of Beeghly Center. It will accommodate fan traffic to the west concourse level for seating in sections one through seven. The two original stadium elevator towers, on the Fifth Avenue side, will now be utilized strictly for news media and private loge holders only.

CHICAGO — Youngstown State (2-11, 0-4 Horizon League) lost to Loyola (10-5-2, 5-1-1), 4-1, Sunday.

YSU's Caitlin Bodzioney finished with 11 saves and Jordan Gapczynksi scored the Penguins' goal.

Volleyball

MORGANTOWN, W. Va. — Jessica Fraley posted a match-high 15 kills with a .583 hitting percentage to lead Youngstown State (9-15) past West Virginia, 30-20, 30-16, 30-24, Sunday, snapping the Penguins' seven match losing streak. Ebony Barbosa posted 11 kills and 13 digs, while Karla Everhart added 43 assists, and four aces. Ruth Boscaljon tallied nine kills with a .438 hitting percentage and four blocks.

Cuts made

YOUNGSTOWN — The Youngstown SteelHounds released seven players as training camp winds down.

Released were forward Kelly Thomson, Nick Thomas, Shaun Aebig, Michel Bond and Ryan Boyko, defenseman Vince Guiducci and goaltender Corey Wogtech.

The 'Hounds roster stands at 22 players — seven defensemen, 13 forwards and two goaltenders.

The season begins Friday in Memphis.

YOUNGSTOWN — Taylor Hill of Cardinal Mooney High was named Steel Valley Conference football player of the week.

Hill, a 6-foot-2, 215-pound junior defensive end, had 10 tackles in the Cardinals' 47-7 win over Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary. He had four tackles for loss, one hurry and a forced fumble.

STRUTHERS — Mimi Vitello had three goals as Mooney High defeated Champion, 8-0, in a girls soccer game Saturday night.

Vitello also had two assists for Mooney (11-2-1), while Katie Griswold had two goals and an assist. Vickie Dreiling had a goal and an assist, while Ashley Cuba and Kara Joseph also scored goals. Cuba and Emma Engler also had assists, and Veronica Skowron recorded her ninth shutout of the season. Champion's Beth Sayer had 11 saves.

CANTON — Boardman High's Mike Lower and Justine Cullen were named to the Federal League first team for boys and girls golf, respectively.

Lower, a junior, was joined by teammate John Watkins, a junior, and Fitch senior Mike Dota, who were named to the second team. Joe Strawinski and Scott Warden, two Boardman juniors, were named honorable mention.

Cullen, a senior, was joined on the girls team by Boardman freshman Devin Ferrell, who was named to the second team.

North Canton Hoover's Mark Grady was named boys player of the year, and Lake's Thom Grubb was coach of the year. The girls top awards went to Perry's Larry Grovemiller for coach and Megan Weaver for player.
