Baseball team
loses in Texas
NACOGDOCHES, Texas The Stephen F. Austin baseball team scored five runs in the fifth inning after posting just one hit through the first four in an 8-1 victory over Youngstown State Friday in the Penguins' season opener.
In what began as a pitcher's duel between YSU's Lucas Engle and Lance Luetge, the Lumberjacks (4-8) produced four hits in the fifth and scored all eight runs in their final four innings.
Engle (0-1) surrendered five runs on five hits in five innings of work while Luetge (3-1) allowed one run on four hits in seven innings.
The Penguins had a chance to score in the first inning when John Koehnlein singled and advanced to third with one out. Luetge, however, struck out Lou Gattozzi and Brent Parks to end the inning.
Neither team scored until the fifth when five Lumberjacks cross the plate. Noel Trevino brought home Kevin Croft on a sacrifice fly with one out to make the score 1-0, and Steven Hill followed with a two-run double to left. Right fielder Jared Pitts then hit a two-run homer to left to bring in Hill and make the score 5-0.
The Penguins got within four in the seventh when Erich Diedrich scored on Eric Marzec's sacrifice fly. Diedrich led off the inning with a double down the right field line and advanced to third on Parks' single. Marzec then hit a one-out sacrifice fly to center to score Diedrich.
Pitts, Croft and Jeff Brewer had two hits apiece to pace the Lumberjacks while Koehnlein, Diedrich, Parks and Gattozzi each had hits for the Penguins. Diedrich's double extended his hitting streak to nine games dating back to last season.

Harris earns
bowling honors
NEW CASTLE Brandon Harris of Akron took top honors in the 6th annual Michael "Mickey" Michalojko Memorial scratch bowling tournament at Colonial Lanes recently.
Harris captured the title by out-slugging his competitors on demanding lane conditions. Rounding out the final four contestants from the field of 123, were runner-up Brian Murphy of New Castle, third-place Todd Hadden of Dixonville, Pa. and fourth-place Joe Bailey of Doylestown.
After the first game of the final-four two-game match, Harris trailed Murphy by 39 pins. He was able to make up the difference with a last game of 233, while Murphy struggled on the other pair of lanes. Pizza Joe's was the main sponsor. Browns win
draft coin toss
CLEVELAND Cleveland won a coin flip with Tampa Bay on Friday at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis and will pick third overall in April's draft. The Buccaneers will select fourth.
The teams finished with identical 4-12 records last season and their opponents had the same winning percentage, making the coin toss necessary.
Browns general manager Phil Savage and Tampa Bay GM Bruce Allen represented their clubs at the coin toss. Allen called heads and the coin landed tails, giving the Browns the No. 3 overall pick for the fifth time in club history.
In 2005, the Browns selected wide receiver Braylon Edwards with the third choice.
