Cope meet canceled
SALEM The E.E. Cope Invitational boys track and field meet has been cancelled.
Greg Steffey, Salem High athletic director said, "Because of spring break, schools that competed in past years didn't enter this time. We had moved the meet to Thursday because of Good Friday, but that didn't make a difference, schools didn't want to compete while on spring break."
Only six teams had signed up for the meet.
"We'll hold the boys meet next year and expect a good turnout for it," said Steffey.
Roundball Classic
at Geneva
BEAVER FALLS, Pa. The Roundball Classic will be held at Geneva College's Metheny Fieldhouse April 14.
A girls all-star game is set for 6:30 p.m. with a boys all-star contest scheduled for 8:30. Both games will feature players that have been awarded all-state and all-section honors. The 3 point competition will be held during halftime of each game.
MUC athletes named
*ALLIANCE Mount Union College freshman Cecil Shors III, senior Justin Rodhe and junior Amanda Kolanz were named Ohio Athletic Conference track and field athletes of the week.
Shorts placed first in the 110 hurdles (15.23 seconds) in the 400 hurdles (55.43) and was a member of winning 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams at the OAC Gold Meet in Marietta.
Rodhe placed first in the discus with an NCAA automatic qualification mark of 176 feet and the shot put with a NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 54-63/4.
Kolanz took first place in the high jump (5-33/4) and long jump (16-111/2), was second in the triple jump (34-0) and was a member of the second-place 4x100 relay.
*ALLIANCE Mount Union College junior Lindsey Royer was named Ohio Athletic Conference softball pitcher of the week.
Royer (14-3, 1.82 ERA) went 6-0 last week and didn't allow a run in 301/3 innings.
Durrell Richardson wins bout
WARREN Youngstown's Durrell Richardson (9-0, 4 KOs) won a unanimous six-round decision over Lorain's William Prato (5-2, 3 KOs) in the co-feature of a five-bout card Saturday at Packard Music Hall. Richardson won the first three rounds, lost the fourth, won the fifth and stayed out of danger in the sixth, finishing with 58-56, 59-55 and 58-56 decision on the judges' three cards.
Richardson weighed in at 154 pounds to Prato's 160 in the first weigh-in, but the difference was more significant in the pre-fight weigh-in, with Richardson at 158 and Prato at 1671/2.
In the other main event, Warren heavyweight Zack Page (12-1) earned a fifth-round TKO over Troy Beets of Ocean Springs, Miss.
PSAC standouts
LOCK HAVEN, Pa. Slippery Rock University's Jennifer Hansen and Andi Rose were named track and field athletes of the week by the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference.
Hansen, a sophomore from Charleston, W. Va., reached 12 feet, 83/4 inches in the pole vault at the Charlotte Invitational, breaking her school and PSAC record by 43/4 inches. Rose, a senior from Wheeling, W. Va., won the 100 hurdles in 13.99 seconds and was second in the 400 hurdles (1:01.60).
Senior bowling
YOUNGSTOWN The next senior bowling tournament will be the senior/adult event April 21-22 at Holiday Bowl and Camelot Lanes.
The senior/adult is for bowlers 50 and older and 49-under with the Greater Youngstown Bowling Association or Youngstown Women's Bowling Association.

*FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. Dana Altman changed his mind and will return to Creighton rather than take over as Arkansas men's basketball coach.
Altman was introduced as the Razorbacks' new coach Monday. But late Tuesday afternoon, television stations in Little Rock and Omaha, Neb., began reporting that Altman would stay with the Bluejays.
*DURHAM, N.C. Gail Goestenkors is leaving Duke to coach the Texas women's basketball team.
Goestenkors, 44, built a powerhouse during her 15 seasons at Duke, winning seven Atlantic Coast Conference coach of the year awards and compiling a career record of 396-99.
NASCAR mandates change with COT
RICHMOND, Va. NASCAR will mandate a change in the design of the Car of Tomorrow in an attempt to alleviate the heat that caused foam to melt in several cars last weekend at Martinsville.
