Big first half helps Liberty top Girard
Newton Falls beat LaBrae in another Trumbull Athletic Conference game.
LIBERTY The Liberty High School boys basketball team (6-2, 1-1) held Girard to four points in the first quarter and two in the second to take a commanding 39-6 lead at intermission en route to a 67-27 victory.
Mychal Doblanski sparked the Leopards with 12 points, seven rebounds and had five assists in the Trumbull Athletic Conference contest. Justin Barker and Isaiah Bell chipped in with 10 points apiece.
Andrew Schenker led the Indians (1-1) with 11 points.
Newton Falls 59, LaBrae 43
NEWTON FALLS The Tigers (3-4, 1-1 TAC) trailed 16-12 at the end of the first quarter, but bounced back 22-5 to lead 34-21 at halftime and the Vikings couldn't recover.
In the final period, the Tigers didn't make a basket, but connected on 11-of-13 free throws to seal the victory.
Matt Dillon, 6-2 senior forward, paced the Tigers with 32 points with six of his baskets coming from 3-point range.
Eric Hart led the Vikings (5-3, 1-1) with 14 points. Mike Ryan chipped in with 12.
Norton 82, Southeast 50
RAVENNA Joe Le-Mon led Southeast with 18 points while Matt Bright scored 16.
Kennedy Catholic 58,
Conneaut Valley 42
CONNEAUTVILLE, Pa. Sophomores Marsell Holden and Kyle Randall had 17 and 14 points, respectively, while senior Chris Pacsi added 10 points and seven rebounds for Kennedy (6-4).
Girls
Youngstown Christian 41,
St. John & Paul 30
ASHTABULA Youngstown Christian (9-3, 2-2) outscored Sts. John & Paul in the second half, 25-10, to win the East Suburban Conference game.
Junior Kara Cooper had 14 points and seven steals. Junior Vickie Bankhead grabbed 12 rebounds and freshman Sara Bell had 10.
