SteelHounds paid expansion fee

Owner Herb Washington said the team is still owed travel expenses.

YOUNGSTOWN — SteelHounds owner Herb Washington said Thursday that his third-year Central Hockey League team has paid its $1 million expansion fee to the league.

Washington responded to a story in Thursday's Vindicator that said neither the team nor the CHL would confirm how much of the SteelHounds' expansion fee remains to be paid.

Washington, who says the team has a financial dispute with the league, said his franchise has not been compensated for travel expenses.

The SteelHounds are the only CHL team in the eastern time zone. Their 32 road games are against teams in Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Mississippi and Colorado.

Washington said the SteelHounds and CHL have a financial impasse that needs to be resolved.

"Money is tied up in the dispute," Washington said.

The owner said his team owes the CHL money to cover league fees that have been assessed as well as fines his players earned for rambunctious play.

The CHL is owned by Global Entertainment, the arena management company that operated the two-year-old Chevrolet Centre until Oct. 31. That's when Youngstown and Global dissolved their partnership because of the city's dissatisfaction with how the struggling facility has been managed.

"We have had no dialogue with Global about what happens now that they no longer run the arena," Washington said.

Earlier this week, Washington said he is exploring the possibility of having the SteelHounds join another league, perhaps as soon as next fall.

Washington said he's pleased with how well the SteelHounds (7-0-1) have performed in the first eight games of their 14-game roadtrip to open the season.

"It's a testament to the guys and their coach [Kevin Kaminski]," Washington said. "Most teams would be ecstatic to come back with a .500 record.

"This shows the public that we are committed to bringing quality hockey here," Washington said.

Tonight, the SteelHounds face the Ice Bats in Austin, Texas.

Their home opener will be Nov. 24 against the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs.
