ST. LOUIS For just the second time since joining the Gateway Conference in 1997, a YSU player has earned consecutive Defensive Player-of-the-Week accolades.
Senior cornerback Jason Perry was honored for the second straight week following his performance against Missouri State. Perry becomes just the third defensive player to be named the conference's player of the week on back-to-back occasions. YSU's Tim Johnson earned consecutive awards in 2000 while Southern Illinois' Alexis Moreland accomplished the feat in 2004. He had a hand in setting up 17 points during the win over the Bears. He intercepted two passes and returned one for a key touchdown, while adding two tackles and a pass breakup.
With YSU leading 16-10, he intercepted a pass returning it 40 yards for a touchdown giving the Penguins 14 points in a span of 44 seconds of the third period. Earlier in the contest he intercepted a pass and returned it 23 yards to set up a field goal. He also had four punt returns for 36 yards, including a 16-yard return, which set up the Guins' final touchdown of the a four-score third quarter.
He also had a hand in another turnover recovering a fumbled interception by YSU's Bob Perez in the first half.
Women's soccer
YOUNGSTOWN YSU lost 1-0 to Horizon League foe UW-Green Bay on Sunday afternoon at Stambaugh Stadium.
Freshman goalkeeper Caitlin Bodzioney finished with 10 saves for the Penguins (2-8, 0-1). The Phoenix (6-2-2, 1-0-1) came up with a score at the 17 minute mark from senior Stephanie Gross off the assist from midfielder Clair Townsend.
The Penguins took nine shots on goal including three from Jordan Gapzynksi. Tessa Brookman and Roechelle Boone both took shots on goal but each were saved.
"I was very pleased with the team's performance," said coach Anthony James. "I saw a great improvement from Friday's match.
"This was an unfortunate loss because the teams were both so evenly matched throughout the game."
Women's golf
LEWISBURG, Pa. Junior Brittany Jones finished sixth as YSU tied for fourth place at the 17-team Bucknell Fall Classic which concluded on Sunday.
The Penguins finished with a two-round score of 665 (333-332) to place fourth along with Rutgers. Bucknell won the event with a 632, Lehigh was second, one shot behind, and Siena came in third at 641.
Jones led the way for the second straight event placing an impressive sixth out of 87 competitors. Jones had rounds of 80 and 77 to finish with a 157. Bucknell's Teri Schlang took medalist honors with a 151. Freshman Brittany Stillwagon was the Guins' second-best finisher coming in 24th place with a 167 (87-80). Junior Felicia Ciotola was 33rd with a 172 (87-85), sophomore Mollie Boney placed 38th with a 174 (81-93) and senior Bonnie Sherman was 41st carding a 175 (85-90).

Akron Marathon
AKRON The Youngstown Road Runners Club was well-represented at Saturday's Akron Marathon. The YRRC had three teams in the relay event and numerous runners in the full marathon. The Youngstown team finished first in the Masters Division (over 40), winning its event with a time of 2:57.49 28 minutes ahead of the second place team.
The Fabulous Finnerty Five of Poland finished in 3:11 in the mixed relay for an 11th place and the YRRC FM team was 73rd with a team with only one runner under 56. YRRC individual honors go to Velma Verhage who finished first in her age group (55-59) in 4:06.
Hubbard graduate
scores three goals
NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. Junior Christina Adams scored three goals within a span of just two minutes to lead the Westminster College women's soccer team to an 8-0 win over Waynesburg.
Adams, a graduate of Hubbard High School, had just four career goals prior to the game for the Titans (5-3-1, 1-0 PAC).
Adams scored at the 58:42 mark of the second half and added her second tally 53 seconds later. Her third goal came just 63 seconds later to boost the Titans' lead to 5-0.
VASJ tops Girard
CLEVELAND Colleen Lynch had 28 assists and 25 digs and Margo Mergoni 16 kills to lead Villa Angela-St. Joseph past Girard in a closely-contested high school volleyball match Saturday between two state-ranked teams.
Villa Angela-St. Joseph had 23-25-25-25, Girard 25-24-21-17.
Villa Angela-St. Joseph (11-4) was ranked No. 12 in Division III while Girard (14-3) was No. 11. Aysha Nickels had 39 assists, eight serving points, two aces, eight dogs and three saves to lead Girard, while Elise Roscoe had 16 kills and 14 digs.
SVC honors Herron
YOUNGSTOWN Warren Harding senior Dan Herron was named the Steel Valley Conference player of the week for his performance in last Friday's 14-0 win over Ursuline.
Herron carried 26 times for 130 yards and scored a touchdown and also had an interception. He has already verbally committed to play running back at Ohio State next fall.
