Slippery Rock, Pa. SRU (7-1-1) outshot the Huskies (4-4-2) by a 20-13 margin, including a 10-7 edge in shots on goal, but could not put a shot in the back of the net. Sophomore goalie Jen McCormick recorded seven saves in her first start of the season after undergoing offseason knee surgery. The Rock, in addition to being ranked 13th in the latest National Soccer Coaches Assn. of America Division II national poll, is ranked second in the NSCAA Northeast Regional poll. In PSAC-West competition, SRU sits atop the standings at 5-0.
John Carroll 2, Hiram 0 Natalie Bernot had both goals in the second half for John Carroll. The Blue Streaks outshot the Terriers, 18-5. Jenny Sopkovich (Girard HS) had two shots on goal for the winners. Hiram goalies Eileen McIver and Kayleigh Sopko combined for eight saves.
Westminster 5, Pitt-Greensburg 0 Mallory Bugel (Mars HS) scored a pair of goals. Sophomore midfielder Christina Adams (Hubbard HS) and junior defender Anna Sparacino (Verona, Pa.) assisted. Adams and Sparacino also assisted on a goal by sophomore midfielder Abby Montgomery (McMurray, Pa.) in the seventh minute. Other goal scorers for the Titans were Kait Etzel-Hardman (Baldwin HS) with her first of the season and freshman Lauren Graeser (Jefferson Hills, Pa.) with her second. Freshman goalie Lindsey Mellott (Cortland, Ohio) registered the shutout making just one save as the Titans outshot the Bobcats, 26-5. Westminster (4-3-1) returns to action Sept. 30, at Waynesburg.
W & J 3, Westminster 1 Senior outside hitter Rachael Cooper (Laurel HS) was the only Titan to hit for double-digit kills with 11 to go with four blocks. Sophomore setter Traci Hassell (Hubbard HS) also had solid numbers with 34 assists, 19 digs and four blocks, while junior Jenna Hinks (Mineral Ridge) collected 17 digs. Senior middle hitter Katie McDermott (Austintown Fitch) had a team-high five blocks to go with six kills and eight digs. The Presidents (7-6, 1-0 PAC) had four players with double-figure kills, led by Stacey Ley's 17. Westminster (11-4, 1-1 PAC) has the week off before hosting Grove City 'in PAC action at the Buzz Ridl Gym on Sept. 28.
