WESTERVILLE The Purple Raiders took a 34-7 lead with 13 minutes left in the second quarter, despite running just five offensive plays at that point, in the Ohio Athletic Conference opener for both teams. Mount Union quarterback completed 12 of 22 passes for 317 yards, five touchdowns and an interception as the Purple Raiders stayed unbeaten (2-0, 1-0). Nate Kmic had 135 yards on the ground on 11 carries while Pierre Garcon grabbed six balls for 152 yards and two scores. The Cardinals were paced by wideout Josh Bope, who had six catches for 116 yards. Paul Stelzer finished the game 19-of-40 passing for 240 yards.
Walsh 38, W. Virginia Tech 0
NORTH CANTON Antwain Reine carried 23 times for 120 yards and a touchdown to lead Walsh. Tech (0-3), scoreless this season, was held to minus-one yard rushing and was penalized 13 times for 118 yards. Walsh (3-0) was flagged for 11 penalties and 101 yards, but still gained 238 yards on the ground. Walsh got a pair of touchdowns in the second quarter on a 7-yard run by Jeff Tallman and a 15-yard run by Reine. Mark Pullen, who was 3-of-10 for 69 yards, hit Rob Lash on a 47-yard play for a score in the third, and Rayshaun Kizer returned an interception 42 yards for a touchdown. Pullen started the fourth quarter with a 1-yard touchdown run.
Carnegie Mellon 33, Westminster, Pa. 6
PITTSBURGH Kevin Mulkern threw for 130 yards and two touchdowns, and ran for a third touchdown to ignite Carnegie Mellon. Carnegie Mellon (3-0) amassed 451 yards in total offense, including 313 on the ground. Westminster (0-2) managed only 180 yards in total offense, 120 of which came through the air. After a scoreless first quarter, the Tartans scored 26 points in the second quarter. Jamie Ploetzner dropped Nick McKolosky in the end zone for a safety six seconds into the second quarter to put the Tartans on the board. The Titans finally got on the board in the fourth quarter, when freshman quarterback Kevin Franz had a 21-yard touchdown run.
Malone 24, St. Xavier 21
CHICAGO Mike Skvor's 43-yard field goal with 7 seconds remaining gave Malone the decision. Skvor also had field goals of 25 and 36 yards. Brad Reifsnyder was 23-of-30 for 244 yards and two touchdowns for Malone (2-1). Derek Deardorff scored on a 43-yarder, and Bernard Payton on a 16-yard play that got Malone within 2 midway through the fourth quarter. A 2-point conversion from Reifsnyder to LaRoi Johnson tied it at 21.
Bethany 34, Ohio Wesleyan 28
DELAWARE, Ohio Brent Owens threw a 9-yard touchdown pass to Matt Cruse with 1 second remaining to rally Bethany to the verdict. Ohio Wesleyan (0-3) blew a 21-0 halftime lead. The Battling Bishops still led 28-20 in the fourth quarter, but Brett Clough scored on a 2-yard run for Bethany with 46 seconds left. Bethany (2-1) then recovered an onside kick, setting up the game-winning drive.
Thomas More 21, Grove City 20
GROVE CITY, Pa. Thomas More quarterback Trevor Stellman fired a 16-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Chase Weber with 2:21 left, helping the Saints earn the narrow win. Grove City (0-2, 0-1 PAC) fell behind 14-0 in the first quarter but rallied to eventually take a 20-14 lead with 12:22 left. Sophomore Stephen Mercer (Beaver Local) caught a 29-yard touchdown pass from freshman quarterback Andrew DiDonato with 5:19 left in the first quarter, cutting the Saints' lead to 14-6.
Albion 24, Thiel 20
GREENVILLE, Pa. Albion College posted 14 unanswered points in the fourth quarter at Thiel College's Alumni Stadium. Albion (2-1) finished with a 292-272 edge in total yards, including a 160-116 advantage in rushing yards. Thiel (1-2) held a 19-13 advantage in first downs and a 31:06 28:04 edge in time of possession. Thiel opened the scoring with 9:41 to play in the first quarter when senior tailback Jeremiah Conley caught a 3-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Billy Blankenship.
Allegheny 52, Hiram 7
MEADVILLE, Pa. Jimmy Savage threw three touchdown passes and Mario Tarquinio ran for two more scores. Savage completed 18 of 28 passes for 302 yards and connected with three different receivers on touchdown passes: Jim Lieb, Dallas Robinson, and Jeremy Walker. Tarquinio rushed for 213 yards on 25 carries and scored on runs of 53 and 14 yards. Allegheny (2-1) also scored on a 30-yard interception return by Andy Toner and a 21-yard run by Matt Feldhaus. Hiram (0-3) scored its only points on a 2-yard run by Sean Kaminski.
