Scrappers' uprising falls short, 6-4, in Auburn
Mahoning Valley has lost three straight games and is 21/2 games out of first.
AUBURN, N.Y. Too little, too late.
Alex Castillo's two-out, two-run double in the top of the ninth pulled the Scrappers within two runs, but they could get no closer as the Auburn Doubledays held on for a 6-4 victory on Sunday night in a New York-Penn League game.
Castillo finished with two hits and Justin Jenkins added three hits and an RBI for Mahoning Valley (6-7), which has dropped three straight games and now sits 21/2 games back of Williamsport in the Pinckney Division standings.
Starting pitcher Ryan Miller (0-2) lasted just one-third of an inning, giving up five runs (all earned) on three hits and four walks.
Manuel Rodriguez had the big blast, hitting a three-run homer in the first off Miller.
Jonathan Arencibia had two hits and scored a run to lead the Doubledays (7-6), who are 11/2 games back of the Crosscutters.
Adam Rogers (1-0) pitched 31/3 innings of relief, giving up two runs to get the victory.
Ronald Lowe pitched the final 11/3 innings to earn his fourth save.
