COLLEGE BOWL PREVIEW | Today

FLORIDA STATE (6-6) vs. UCLA (7-5)

What: Emerald Bowl.
Where: San Francisco.
Game time: 8 p.m.
TV: ESPN.
Coaches: Bobby Bowden (292-81-5 in 31st year at FSU) and Karl Dorrell (29-20 in fourth year at UCLA).
Payout: Each school receives $750,000.
Bowl records: FSU is 19-13-2. UCLA is 13-13-1.
Last bowl appearance: Florida State lost to Penn State, 26-23 in triple overtime, in last year's Orange Bowl. UCLA beat Northwestern, 50-38, in last year's Sun Bowl.
Series history: First meeting.
Last game: Florida State lost, 21-14, at home to Florida on Nov. 25. UCLA beat USC, 13-9, on Dec. 2.
Stat that matters: Seminoles' 14 losses the last three years are one more than FSU suffered in the entire decade of the 1990s.
Game facts: In first trip to West Coast since 1997, FSU needs upset to avoid first losing season since Bowden's first year (5-6) in 1976. Inept offense (73rd in nation in total offense, 322 ypg, scored 20 points or less in five losses) suffered another blow with loss of FB Joe Surratt (shoulder). Defense will also be minus DTs Paul Griffin, Kendrick Stewart, both down with knee injuries, but still led nation with 102 tackles for loss, 18 by menacing LB Lawrence Timmons (5 sacks, 2 blocked kicks). Sky-high Bruins shocked the world with win over USC that knocked hated Trojans out of BCS national title game. For a change, UCLA does it with defense (12th in nation vs. run, 89.9 ypg, 6th with 39 sacks) that yielded only 28 points in season-ending wins over Oregon State, Arizona State and USC. DEs Justin Hickman, Bruce Davis are tied for second in nation with 12-1/2 sacks each. After struggling taking over for Ben Olson, who went down with a knee injury in October, sophomore QB Pat Cowan came on down the stretch (38-of-68, 427 passing, 4 TDs, 1 int., TD in last three wins). K Justin Medlock (led nation with 26 field goals vs. only four misses) is valuable weapon in close games.
