Jacquelyn E. “Jackie” Bish, 75

YOUNGSTOWN – Funeral services will be held at 11 am Monday at the Lane Funeral Home, Austintown Chapel for Jacquelyn E. “Jackie” Bish, 75, who died Friday morning.

Jackie was born Jan. 7, 1933 in Youngstown, the daughter of Trall and Flora (Oartz) Morrison, and was a lifelong area resident.

She was employed as an IBM operator for U.S. Steel and had also worked at the Lordstown Depot. She was a 1951 graduate of Jackson Milton High School.

Jackie was an avid reader; she loved American History and was a Civil War buff. Over the years, she collected many Civil War books.

She is survived by sons, Samuel J. (Laura) Morrison of Lake Milton, Thomas E. (Nancy) Bish of Youngstown and James M. Bish of San Diego; grandchildren, Kelly Morrison, Kerry MacPhee, Melanie Humphrey, Julie Bish, Tiffany Bish, Donald Bish and Cody Bish; and great-grandchildren, Courtney, Emily, Kyla, Jacob and Cody.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert L. Bish; her parents; and cherished granddaughter, Christina Ann Bish.

Ann Marie Garavich, 86

YOUNGSTOWN – There will be a Blessing service at 9:30 a.m. Monday, Dec. 1, 2008, at the Rossi Brothers & Lellio Funeral Home, 4442 South Ave. in Boardman, followed by a 10 a.m. Divine Liturgy at St. Nicholas Byzantine Catholic Church, 1898 Wilson Ave. in Youngstown for Ann Marie Garavich, 86, who passed away peacefully Thanksgiving Day at Forum Health Northside Medical Center with her family by her side.

Ann was born Sept. 13, 1922 in Youngstown, the daughter of John and Anna Krell.

She retired after many years of employment at Forum Health Northside Medical Center. Ann was a member of St. Nicholas Byzantine Catholic Church, its Ladies Auxiliary, Senior Citizen group, and was a pierogi and bingo worker. She enjoyed playing bingo, traveling, gardening, and working in her yard.

Her husband, John Garavich Sr., passed away in February of 1976.

She will be sadly missed by her sons, John Jr. and Robert Garavich, with whom she made her home; sister-in-law, Peggy Garavich; and many loving nieces and nephews, and great-nieces and great-nephews.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters; Mary (Mike) Duzzy and Mildred (Mike) Reiter; a brother, John (Barbara) Krell; five in-laws, Ann (John) Bailey, Joseph (Cynthia) Garavich, Michael (Mary) Garavich, Mary (Emil) Dutko, and Robert Garavich; and two nephews, John Bailey and Ronald Reiter.

Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 30, at the funeral home, where a prayer service will be held at 5 p.m.

Merion “Lemon” Kennedy, 71

COLUMBUS – There will be a funeral service at 1 p.m. Monday at the F.D. Mason Memorial Funeral Home Inc., for Merion “Lemon” Kennedy, 71, formerly of Youngstown, who departed this life on Monday at his residence.

Mr. Kennedy was born May 2, 1937 in Youngstown, a son of Benjamin and Berta Pickard Kennedy.

He had been a truck driver for Leggett Trucking and owner and operator of O & M Cleaners.

He leaves his wife, the former Ossie O. Timpson, whom he married Jan. 21, 1956; children, Jacqueline B. Kennedy (Timothy) Brocker of North Hollywood, Calif., Marian L. Kennedy (Raymond) Howard of Palm Dale, Calif., Marvella Kennedy (Will) Smith of Long Beach, Calif., Tenise Y. (Keith Cox) Kennedy, Patreas Y. (Andrae Price) Kennedy and Melvin K. Kennedy, all of Columbus; adopted son, Tony (Debra) Hilton of Youngstown; brothers, Calvin and Curtis Kennedy, both of Youngstown and Warren Kennedy of Richmond, Va.; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

His parents and brothers, Napoleon, Benjamin Jr. and Wilbur Kennedy, preceded him in death.

Friends may call one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Jack H. Kleiner, 76

LIBERTY TOWNSHIP – There will be services at 11 a.m. Monday at the New Life Lutheran Church for Jack H. Kleiner, 76, who passed away at his residence on Thanksgiving morning.

Jack was born Aug. 4, 1932 in Youngstown, a son of John F. and Helen M. Steinert Kleiner.

He was a 1950 graduate of The Rayen School and was a lifelong area resident. He graduated from Youngstown State University, and was vice president of the Alpha Tau Gamma Honorary Accounting Fraternity. He worked for the A & P Tea Company in Youngstown for 10 years. He later worked at Youngstown Sheet & Tube, where he was an assistant manager of pricing, manager of pricing and invoicing, manager of accounts payable, manager of accounting, and staff assistant to the comptroller for 34 years, retiring in 1994.

After his retirement, he was a dedicated employee for the Stewart-Kyle Funeral Home and Western Reserve Leasing, which serves many area funeral homes.

He was a member of the New Life Lutheran Church, where he had served as treasurer, and was the financial secretary of Christ the King Lutheran Church. He also was the president and treasurer of the Mahoning Valley Management Association, a member of The Saxon Club, and Chancellor Commander of K of P Lodge 65 in Girard.

He enjoyed restoring Chevrolet Corvettes and selling Corvette parts at many area swap meets. He was an amateur pilot and bought and restored airplanes for many years.

He will be sadly missed by his wife, the former Esther Daley, whom he married April 25, 1959; his two sons, John Kleiner of Girard and Gary (Maureen) Kleiner of Howland; his daughter, Patty (Rob) Elston of Youngstown; and his five grandchildren, Matthew Kleiner, Jenna Kleiner, Emily Kleiner, Rachel Kleiner and Bannon Elston.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a daughter-in-law, Michelle Kleiner.

There will be calling hours Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Stewart-Kyle Funeral Home and Monday from 10 to 11 a.m. at the New Life Lutheran Church.

John Kolenich, 85

YOUNGSTOWN - John Kolenich, 85, of Overlook Avenue, passed away Wednesday evening, Nov. 26, 2008, at St. Elizabeth Health Center following a brief illness.

John was born Jan. 16, 1923 in Youngstown, a son of the late Michael and Anna Kolenich, and was a lifelong area resident.

He worked for 40 years at U.S. Steel Corp., McDonald Works, retiring in 1978.

Mr. Kolenich was a member and usher at St. Anne Ukrainian Catholic Church, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of WWII, and enjoyed walking, traveling, caring for his grandchildren, and socializing with his friends.

His wife, Elizabeth Jean Sinchak Kolenich, whom he married Feb. 15, 1947, died Sept. 3, 1995.

He is survived by four sons, Richard (Karen) Kolenich of Liberty Township, Robert (Kathleen) Kolenich, William (Debbie) Kolenich and James (Trina) Kolenich, all of Austintown; 10 grandchildren, Lori Ciminero, Jason (Elizabeth), Michael, Ryan, Katie, Amy, Kelli and Jeffrey Kolenich, Britney Teie, and Jamin (Evin) Wilson; four great-grandchildren, Alexis and Aidan Kolenich, Brooklyn Ciminero and Ayden Wilson; two brothers, Pete (Carol) Kolenich of Girard and Michael (Dorothy) Kolenich of Warren; and two sisters, Eva Battafarano of Scottsdale, Ariz. and Mary Sebastian of Youngstown.

A brother, Daniel Kolenick, is deceased.

David “Skip” Longmore, 79

POLAND – David “Skip” Longmore, 79, passed away peacefully Thursday, Nov. 27, 2008, at Select Specialty Hospital in Boardman surrounded by those who loved and adored him.

David was born May 28, 1929 in Youngstown, a son of Hunter and Henrietta Corrigan Longmore.

He was a 1948 graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School and he joined the U.S. Air Force in 1951 and served during the Korean War.

He worked as a machinist for the Sharon Steel Corporation in Lowellville and Farrell, Pa. for 43 years, retiring in 1991. He was a member of the United Steel Workers Union.

David was instrumental in promoting the Poland Community Baseball Association as early as 1961, long before he had any participating children. Initially, he helped to maintain the field and he umpired as needed. He then started his coaching career in Little League, when his children, David and Patrick were of age, he coached their Little League teams, winning two championships. With the help of many friends, he built what was to become the baseball field for the girls’ softball league.

He was the former president of the Poland Community Baseball Association and remained in the organization until 1991, retiring as the Assistant Director of the Girls’ Softball League.

David also loved bowling, having played on various leagues from 1979 to just this past year. He served as a Director with the Men’s Bowling Association.

In addition to his baseball and bowling, his hobbies included woodworking, badminton, horseshoes, and cards, where his legendary competitive spirit was admired as well as feared.

He was a former member of the Holy Family Church in Poland.

Perhaps David’s greatest contribution was the values he passed onto his children. He believed in hard work, dependability, loyalty, honesty, and compassion. He had a very strong belief in family and was his happiest during a family get together, where love and laughter flowed.

David took great pride in being able to help others, lending a hand to anyone who needed it. For those he loved and for those who loved him, the world will be a sadder place with his passing.

David is survived by his cherished and loving wife, the former Claire Ann McCarthy, whom he married Nov. 14, 1952; three children, Carol Ann (Kenneth) Tenney, David James (Patricia) Longmore, and Patrick Charles Longmore, all of Poland; a grandson, Kenneth Michael Longmore; his loving and loyal sisters, Edna Richards of Boardman and Jean Burke of Hubbard; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services will be held Monday at 10 a.m. at the Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home in Poland and 10:30 a.m. at St. Nicholas Roman Catholic Church in Struthers. Interment will follow at Poland Riverside Cemetery.

Family and friends will be received Sunday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Sarah “Sally” L. Lyle

YOUNGSTOWN – Private graveside services were held today for family and friends of Sarah L. “Sally” Lyle, who entered the spirit world on Wednesday, Nov. 26, 2008, with her loving family by her side.

Sally will forever be warmly remembered and loved by her family, friends and students.

She was born Aug. 13, 1921, in Vanderbilt, Pa., the first child and only daughter of Philip and Charlotte Morgan Hagerty, and grew up in south western Pennsylvania and Brownlee Woods in Struthers.

Sally was a 1939 graduate of South High School and earned a B.S. degree in nursing from St. Elizabeth School of Nursing in conjunction with Youngstown College. She did postgraduate work at Brown University, under the tutelage of her beloved mentor, Miss Windley and served as an registered nurse for the naval forces in Newport, R.I. during WWII.

She worked as a RN at the Southside Hospital emergency room for 10 years, and was the anatomy and physiology professor for 23 years at Choffin for the LPN Program, and was much beloved by her scores of students.

Sally was an avid gardener and an absolute master of the art of crocheting. Her many remarkable beautiful creations remain cherished possessions of those many friends who received her gloves, sweaters and quilts.

She was also quite the intrepid and inveterate traveler who toured much of Canada, and reveled in the multitudes of N.P.’s of the Great American West. She was a lover of both oceans, trees, birds and the bees. She retained an extensive and personal photographic record of her multiplicity of adventuresome roamings, both alone and with her three children.

She is survived by her three children, David Alan Lyle of North Hollywood, Calif., Philip Raymond “CK” Lyle of Youngstown and Sheilah Ann (Raymond) Prest of Ellsworth Township; grandson, Jeffrey S. Prest; a brother, Philip J. Hagerty of Leigh Acres, Fla.; as well as scores of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her beloved brother, William “Billy” Hagerty in WWII; and her infant son, Johnny in who died in 1953.

Burial took place at the Forest Lawn Cemetery where she will be beside her beloved mom and dad.

Arrangements are by the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home, Austintown Chapel.

Florence R. (Oswald) Lytle, 88

HOWLAND TOWNSHIP – Florence R. (Oswald) Lytle, 88, passed away on Thursday, Nov. 27, 2008, at her residence.

Florence was born the daughter of the late Clemson and Georgianna (Emerson) Oswald in Warren on Nov. 2, 1920.

A lifetime area resident, Florence graduated from Warren G, Harding High School in 1938. Florence worked at Trumbull Lamp for 25 years as an inspector, retiring in 1982.

Florence was a member of the Otterbein United Methodist Church in Champion, where she belonged to the Methodist Women’s Group. She enjoyed playing the organ, reading, baking, cooking, sewing, cake decorating, and swimming with her grandchildren.

Florence is survived by her husband, Richard Lytle, whom she married Aug. 15, 1940, together they shared 68 years of marriage. Florence is also survived by her five children, Carol (Jim) Workley of Warren, Georgia Lytle of Warren, Richard R. Lytle Jr. of Cortland, James E. (Mary Jo) Lytle of Cortland, and Roger (Rae Lynn) Lytle of North Bloomfield; 11 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.

Florence was preceded in death by her parents; siblings, Lawrence Oswald, Mildred Caldwell, and Edwin Oswald; and her daughter-in-law, Donna J. Lytle.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 1, 2008, at the Roberts-Clark Funeral Chapel in Warren, with Rev. Patricia Christ officiating.

The family will be receiving friends on Sunday, Nov. 30, 2008, from 4 to 6 p.m.

Entombment will take place at Meadowbrook Memorial Park in Champion.

Richard R. Moore, 54

COLUMBUS – Services will be held Monday, Dec. 1, 2008, at 1 p.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home, Boardman-Canfield Chapel for Richard R. “Rick” Moore, 54, who died at Riverside Medical Center in Columbus on Friday morning after a lengthy illness.

Rick was born in Youngstown on June 13, 1954, the beloved son of Shirley and the late Richard R. Moore Sr.

He graduated from Canfield High School in 1972 and worked for the Canfield Schools, the Goodwill Industries, and the Burdman Home. In 2001, Rick moved to Columbus to be closer to his sister Terry. He was employed by ARC Industries until his illness.

Rick loved his family, the holiday season, animals, sports, movies, TV, and pop culture. He had a wonderful sense of humor and until his later years, was an avid walker. He also looked forward to attending the Canfield Fair and the Ohio State Fair and would spend hours enjoying the grounds and games. He also loved attending the Chicago Cubs baseball games. He had a compassionate soul and this carried through in his gentle care and understanding for dogs, cats, and other creatures great and small.

Rick is survived by his mother, Shirley Moore of Canfield; brother, Brad Moore of Chicago; sister, Terry Moore; dear friend, Judith Mayne of Columbus; and aunts, Marjorie Hoover of Canfield and Jeanette Moore of Dana Point, Calif.

His loving father, Dick Moore, preceded him in death.

Elsie L. Mullins

YOUNGSTOWN – A memorial service will be held Monday, Dec. 1, at 6 p.m. at the Disciples Christian Church in Boardman for Elsie Mullins, who passed away Nov. 21, 2008, at Park Vista Nursing Home in Youngstown.

Elsie was born May 8, 1932 in Mount Holly, N.J., the daughter of Gordon and Virginia (Buskirk) Forsythe.

She married Charles Mullins on Nov. 4, 1951, and he passed away Dec. 25, 1994.

She was a member of the Disciples Christian Church.

Survivors include three children, Carolyn (Bernard) Philips and Sandra Mullins, both of Austintown and Michael Mullins of Youngstown; a brother, Thomas Forsythe of Davis, W.Va.; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother; and her husband.

Thomas Robert Neapolitan, 55

MARIETTA – Thomas R. Neapolitan Jr. 55, of Pineview Drive, died at 9:40 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 26, 2008, at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus.

He was born June 11, 1953, in Youngstown, to the late Thomas R. and Pauline Fetsco Neapolitan Sr.

Tom owned and operated Adventure Bay Fishing Camp in Rice Lake, Ontario, Canada. He had worked for 26 years for East Ohio Gas Company and River Gas Company in Youngstown, Ashtabula and Marietta, before leaving as manager in 1999 to purchase Adventure Bay Fishing Camp. Tom enjoyed life in the outdoors.

He was a member of American Legion Post No. 64, V.F.W. Post No. 5108, Marietta Moose Lodge No. 1823, B.P.O. Elks No. 477, and was president of Southeast Ohio Wild Turkey Federation.

Surviving is his wife, Deborah McCraken Neapolitan; sons, William “Bill” Neapolitan (Jamie) of Beloit, Thomas R. Neapolitan III of Youngstown; and a daughter, Jody Greenersen (Jeff) of Beloit;. stepsons, Chad Hughes of Tampa, Fla., Josh Hughes of Austintown and Amer Mauser (B.J.) of Boardman. There are three grandchildren, Jenna, Samatha, and Isaiah.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Greg Neapolitan.

Lila C. Rice, 83

YOUNGSTOWN – Funeral services will be today at 10 a.m. at the Gibson Heights Second Presbyterian Church, for Mrs. Lila C. Rice, 83, who died early Wednesday morning at the Hospice House.

Lila was born April 30, 1925 in Utica, N.Y. to the late Harold and Lila (Bryce) Wright and came to this area as a child.

She graduated from East High School, class of 1943, and from the Youngstown Hospital School of Nursing in 1946. Her professional career as a registered nurse started at the South Side Hospital. She was the director of nursing at Little Forest Medical Care Center, as well as at Park Vista. She retired in 1988.

Lila was a member of the Gibson Heights Second Presbyterian Church, where she was a deacon and Sunday school teacher.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Paul M. Rice Sr., they married Sept. 5, 1953, he died May 29, 1974. She was also preceded by two brothers, Walter and Harold Wright.

She is survived by her son, Paul M. (Diane) Rice Jr. of Poland, and two beloved granddaughters, Allison and Julie Rice of Poland. She also leaves her sister, Nancy Huggins of Pittsburgh.

Friends may call today from 9:30 to 10 a.m., one half hour prior to services at the church at 755 E. Dewey Ave.

H. Gordon Schwarz, 62

NEW CASTLE, PA. – H. Gordon Schwarz, 62, of 423 Schwarz Lane, passed away the evening of Nov. 27, at UPMC Horizon in Farrell, Pa.

Born June 13, 1946 in Bremen, Germany, he was the son of the late Aloys Schwarz and Lieselotte Rode Schwarz McKissick, who resides in New Castle.

He is survived by his wife, Karen Bodine Schwarz, whom he married on Feb. 7, 1994.

Mr. Schwarz graduated in 1964 from Hickory High School. He was in the U.S. Navy stationed in Rota Spain during peacetime. He was a self-employed electrical contractor with the IBEW Local No. 712 for 35 years and retired in 2008.

He was active with the Hickory VFW in West Middlesex, Pa., the Masons of New Wilmington, Pa. and was a Boy Scout leader in Pulaski, Pa. He enjoyed hunting, boating, golfing, snow skiing and his grandchildren. He was a member of St James the Apostle Church.

In addition to his mother and his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Tami Smith of Roaring Springs, Pa.; two sons, Joe Schwarz of Leesburg, Va. and Kurt Schwarz of New Castle; one stepdaughter, Lauri Johnson of Hudson; three stepsons, Mark Hoffman of New Springfield, Richard Hoffman of Boardman and John Leskovyansky of Hubbard; one brother, Ralph A. Schwarz of Peterborough, N.H.; and 10 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father and one granddaughter, Abigail Lipply.

Visitation will be Sunday from 2 to 6 p.m. at the R. Cunningham Funeral Home and Crematory Inc., 2429 Wilmington Road in New Castle.

A service will be conducted Monday at 10 a.m. at St. James the Apostle Church and will be officiated by Fr. John Rebel.

Margaret S. Seidler, 92

ZANESVILLE – Margaret S. Seidler, 92, died at 9:20 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 27, 2008, at the Genesis Good Samaritan Campus, following a lengthy illness.

She was born Sept. 22, 1916 in Youngstown, the daughter of Richard B. and Bertha (Blutcher) Marshall.

She married Stanley Seidler on April 7, 1945. She was a homemaker and a loving wife, mother and grandmother.

In addition to her husband, Margaret is survived by one son, Alan (Norren) Seidler of Zanesville; three grandchildren, Amy (Steve) Kerekes, Laura (Matt) Fellows and Jennifer (Jesh) Folden, all of Dresden; six great-grandchildren, Matthew Fellows Jr., Olivia Kerekes, Justin Kerekes, Ryan Fellows, Garrett Folden and Elle Folden.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, and three brothers.

Visitation will be today from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Hillis & Hardwick Funeral Home, 935 Forest Ave. in Zanesville, where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. with Dr. Herbert Hicks officiating.

Boyd Shaffer Jr., 90

YOUNGSTOWN – Boyd Shaffer Jr., 90, of Omni Manor Nursing Home and formerly of Lanterman Road, passed away Wednesday evening, Nov. 26, 2008, at the emergency room at St. Elizabeth Health Center.

Mr. Shaffer was born March 11, 1918 in Greensburg, Pa., a son of the late Boyd Sr. and Etta Shaffer, and came to this area in 1937.

He worked for 40 years at Youngstown Steel Door, retiring as a welder.

Boyd leaves his son, Richard (Vivian) Shaffer of Springfield, Va.; his daughter, Judi (Jack) McCourt of Florida; two stepchildren, Marilyn Nicklin and Russell Hudson; and eight grandchildren.

Boyd will be truly missed by all who knew and loved him.

His wife, Katherine Shaffer, whom he married in 1951, passed away in July of 1991. Two brothers and three sisters, are also deceased.

Family and friends may call Sunday, Nov. 30, from 3 to 6 p.m. at Kinnick Funeral Home, 477 N. Meridian Road in Youngstown.

Funeral services will take place Monday at 1:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, Boyd’s family requests that donation be made in Mr. Shaffer’s name to the American Heart Association.

Virginia M. (Shetler) Waldron, 89

POLAND – Virginia M. (Shetler) Waldron, 89, died Thursday, Nov. 27, 2008, at home surrounded by her family.

She was born July 19, 1919 in Warren, the daughter of John and Lula Mae (Tidd) Stowe.

Mrs. Waldron had been employed at The Manufacturers’ Association of Eastern Ohio & Western Pennsylvania for sixteen and a half years, as an administrative assistant, before she retired. In addition she served as deaconess, trustee, financial secretary, Sunday school superintendent, board chairman, teacher and clerk for Bolindale Christian Church, as well as serving two terms as president for the Professional Secretaries International.

She was awarded Secretary of the Year in 1968, and was the assistant director for the Trumbull County Civil Defense for six years. Virginia served as the secretary to the Governor’s traffic committee, and for 20 years, as secretary to the Warren City Traffic and Safety Committee. She was also very active in the Warren Christian Woman’s Club.

Virginia wed John C. Shetler on July 3, 1937, and enjoyed 39 years together before his passing on July 30, 1976. She was fortunate enough to find love again and married James A. Waldron, on Feb. 16, 1980, who passed away Nov. 24, 2002.

Surviving is a daughter, Ann (Roger) Rupe of Boardman; a son, Jack (Sandra) Shetler of Poland; six grandchildren, Laurie (Douglas) Thomas of Lakeland Fla., Dr. Randall (Kimberly) Lonsbrough of Los Osos, Calif., Glenn Van Stavern of Leawood, Kan., Jennifer (Jeffery) Brandt of Mansfield, Texas, Brenda Hill and Jack Shetler Jr. both of Howland. Also surviving are nine great-grandchildren; five stepchildren; many step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren; two brothers; and one sister.

Preceding her in death is John C. Shetler, James A. Waldron, one step-son, three brothers and two sisters.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 1, 2008, at the Bolindale Christian Church, 2749 Fairview Ave. S.E., Warren, OH 44484, with Rev. Donald Barnes of Cortland Christian Church officiating.

Interment will follow at the Crown Hill Burial Park.
