Sandra L (Grisham) Matz, 64

BOARDMAN – Sandra L. (Grisham) Matz, 64, an electrical engineer and a former math teacher who advised her students “to enter the world and make a difference,” died Wednesday, Nov. 26, after a long struggle with cancer.

She was born in Hartford, Conn. on Oct. 6, 1944, the daughter of Clayton LeRoy Grisham and Ollie (Lynnick) Grisham, who met during WWII at the Electric Boat Yard in Groton, Conn. After the war, the family lived in Jamestown, R.I. until 1959 when they moved to Warren, where Sandra attended Warren G. Harding High School.

In 1960, when she was 15, she enrolled in the freshman class at Mount Union College in Alliance. In 1962, when she was 18, she dropped out of school and married Leonard E. Matz, a 1962 graduate of Mount Union. In 1963, they had one son, David E. and in 1964, a second son, James B. The couple separated in 1964 and subsequently divorced in 1966.

At age 20, with no education and no job, she commuted to Kent State University, where she worked odd jobs and saved money to support her two sons and finance her education. She graduated in 1968 with a degree in secondary education math and English.

She was hired as a teacher of math at Howland High School in Warren and for 10 years enjoyed what she recalled as the “most rewarding career of her life.” Students in later years expressed gratitude that she had taught them not only math, but “also lessons about life.” To supplement the income needed to raise two sons, she also taught voice and coached the high school cheerleading squad.

At 34, she gave up her career in teaching and, falling back on her mathematical background, she took a job in Warren as a technician with Packard Electric, the wiring division for General Motors. She was promoted eventually to work as an electrical engineer, designing “holders” for the maze of wires that ran though such GM cars as the Cavalier, Sunbird, and Beretta.

In 1993, Mrs. Matz was diagnosed with breast cancer. In 1997, she was declared cancer free. However, she was diagnosed in January of this year with terminal throat cancer.

She loved music, especially “Sound of Music” or anything else with Julie Andrews. She spent a lot of time in her garden and treasured her yellow roses. Mrs. Matz had three fundamental values to share with everyone. One, always try to be a good person. Two, always try to do the right thing. Three, whatever you do in life, do it all the way.

She leaves a son, David and granddaughter, Dana, of Boardman and son, James and wife, Christine, of Beverly, Mass.

Calling hours will be Saturday, Nov. 29, 2008, from 9 to 10 a.m. at the Davis Funeral Home, 4996 Market St. in Youngstown.

A private graveside committal service will immediately follow.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you please make a donation in honor of Sandra L. Matz to one the following, American Cancer Society, Boardman Community Baseball or Boardman Little Spartans.

Mabel Alda Myers, 98

NEW SPRINGFIELD – After a remarkable and independent life of 98 years, Miss Mabel Alda Myers passed away Tuesday afternoon at St. Elizabeth Health Center.

“Aunt Mabel” as she was affectionately known, was born the daughter of Monroe and Ida Myers on Feb. 19, 1910 at her family’s farm in Springfield Township. The weather was blizzard-like with a temperature of –28 degrees. Her dad kept the horses hitched and the road cleared all day long so that the doctor could get through when he was needed.

She attended schools in Springfield Township, graduating from Springfield High School on May 21, 1927…the same day that Charles Lindbergh landed in Paris. As a young girl she traveled with her dad by horse and wagon to deliver their homegrown vegetables to the wealthy families in Youngstown. She later worked at a basket factory and a grocery store in New Springfield. She worked for Marshall Mining Company in the 1950s and she was a security officer for the Boardman KMart from opening day until her retirement in 1973.

She lived her entire life in Springfield Township, a fact of which she was extremely proud. Mabel fondly remembered riding her horse to the school in Petersburg, walking to the grocery store in New Middletown, attending square dances in her family’s barn, and cutting ice from Honey Creek to store in a log house for summer. If someone had a question about the past century in Springfield Township, Mabel was the person to ask. She had an uncanny ability to remember the smallest details about life in her country town…and she was always happy to share her stories.

She was a past member of both the New Middletown and Petersburg Garden Clubs. She raised Arabian horses and was involved in the national show circuit. She was a current member of the Springfield Historical Society and participated in the weekly quilting group.

Her hobbies included sewing, quilting, gardening and craft making. Many Christmas trees are proudly adorned each year with some of her thread spool ornaments or her crocheted Christmas trees. She enjoyed watching “The Big Joe Polka Show” on the RFD channel and lingering over meals with friends. She rarely passed up an opportunity to order a piece of pie!

When she sold her family farm in 1974, she and her brother, Howard, worked together to build her a new house that looked over her former home…and she watched over the farm from her picture window for the next 35 years.

Mabel voted in every election, including Nov. 4, 2008, when she proudly cast her vote from her hospital bed for Sarah Palin!

Mabel is survived by her nephew, Gary (Melinda) Myers of Hurst, Texas; her niece, Phyllis (Bill) Blower of New Middletown; her grandnieces, Audrey, Vicki, Holly and Heather; her grandnephews Todd and Mathew; and her devoted pet “Kitty Myers.”

She will be sadly missed by her adopted family “on the farm,” The Lawless Family.

She was predeceased by her parents; her brothers, Ralph and Howard Myers; and her nephew, Roger Myers.

A recollection from her “adopted” nephew, Shawn Lawless:

“When I was about 10 years old, I was standing out in the front yard with Aunt Mabel and the rest of my family when a truck stopped some distance away and two men started stealing cut timber from Mabel’s land.

I don’t remember all the details but I remember vividly her yelling “get in the car David!” to my father, the two of them flying down the back road, gravel flying from her Plymouth Fury’s tires, and my father telling me after they caught the perpetrators that it was one heck of a ride he had in the passenger’s seat.

This was the quintessential Aunt Mabel. She was, in every sense of the word, a liberated woman. She earned her own way, protected her property, cared for her parents, refused charity, loved animals, and helped others when the opportunity came along.

As recently as last month, she was driving her own car to where she needed to go.

I will miss her genuine kindness but most of all her “call it as I see it” honesty in this politically correct world.”

Miss Myer’s family had lived on the same property in Springfield Township since her great-grandfather received the deed to the land which was signed by President James Monroe. She lived there her entire life.

Aunt Mabel’s chair at the farm will be empty this holiday weekend, but our hearts will be full of love and appreciation because we were lucky enough to be a part of her remarkable life.

Calling hours will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Cunningham Funeral Home in Bessemer, Pa., with a funeral service to follow at 11 a.m.

Burial services will be at Petersburg Cemetery.
