Charles Preston Adkins, 34
BOARDMAN Charles Preston Adkins, 34, of Paxton Street, died Friday, Nov. 21, 2008.
Charles, also known as Chuck, was born June 27, 1974 in Youngstown, a son of the late Charles E. and Jennie Salus Adkins.
He was a 1993 graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School.
Chuck is survived by four sisters, Charlotte (Vasilios) Kouboulas of Flushing, N.Y., Lilly Brate of Germantown, Ohio, Regina Panzo of Youngstown, and Mary Ann Fur of Campbell; two nephews, Pete and Nicholas Kouboulas; and three nieces, Jennie, Martha and Stephanie Kouboulas.
There are no services or calling hours.
Interment will follow at the Lake Park Cemetery in Youngstown.

Anthony Battaglia, 84
BOARDMAN There will be a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Charles Church at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 29, 2008, with the Rev. Philip Rodgers officiating for Anthony Battaglia, 84, who passed away early Wednesday, Nov. 26, 2008, with his loving family by his side.
Anthony will always be remembered and loved by his family and friends.
He was born Dec. 15, 1923 in Youngstown, the son of Antonio and Carmela (Di Florio) Battaglia, and grew up in Smokey Hollow which he was extremely proud of.
Anthony graduated from The Rayen School and after WWII he continued his education at The Ohio State University, and graduated with his education degree from Youngstown College. He then received his masters in education from Westminster University.
Anthony started his teaching career at Coitsville Elementary School, and then for many years he was a special education and OWE teacher at Woodrow Wilson High School. He taught at Youngstown State University and supervised student teachers, and also taught at Choffin Career Center.
Anthony was a U.S. Army veteran of WWII, where he received the rank of private first class and was stationed in Central Europe, Africa, Rhineland and the Northern Apennines. He was awarded the following decorations, the Good Conduct Medal and the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal, with five Bronze Stars.
Anthony truly enjoyed dancing, traveling, being at the ocean, and was extremely proud of his profession. It showed through his countless hours of tutoring, always dressed to perfection, and his promoting of education to others. Nothing made Anthony happier than just spending time with his family especially his grandchildren. He spent many years with his lifelong friends, The Gang, along with being a lifelong member of St. Charles Church.
He leaves behind to hold on to his precious memories his wife of over 63 years, the former Dora Colla, whom he married June 9, 1945; his four children, Diane (Tony) Capple and Gary (Susan) Battaglia, both of Boardman, Anthony Rik (Sheri) Battaglia of Akron, and Kim Geffert of Canfield; and 11 grandchildren, Tony (Melissa) Capple, John (fiancee Melissa Cotton) Capple, Alana Capple, Patrick, Erick, Jamie, Mick and John Battaglia, Nikki (fiance Keith Mason) Geffert, Mike and Toni Marie Geffert.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Josephine Campolito and Lena Fredricks; and three brothers, Joseph, James, and Mario Battaglia.
Friends may call Friday, Nov. 28, 2008, from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Rossi & Santucci Funeral Home, 4700 Market St. in Boardman and Saturday from 9 to 9:50 a.m. at St. Charles Church.
Entombment will take place at Calvary Cemetery with full Military Honors.

Robert M. Burns Sr., 85
AUSTINTOWN Prayers will begin Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home, Austintown Chapel, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial, celebrated at 10:30 a.m. at St. Joseph Church for Robert M. Burns Sr., 85 who passed away Tuesday at the Hospice House after a two week illness.
Bob was born Feb. 27, 1923 in Youngstown, the son of Joseph and Tressa Riblet Burns.
He was a graduate of South High School and served in the U.S. Marine Corps during WWII. He had worked as a deputy sheriff for the Mahoning County Sheriffs Department and for 20 years at the Youngstown Steel Door Corp, retiring in 1981. After his retirement he worked Poling and Bacon Construction from 1981 to 1997. He was a charter member of St. Joseph Church where he served as an usher, was a member and past president of its Mens club and had been named its man of the year. He was a charter member of the American Legion Post No. 732. He was an avid golfer and was proud of golfing in the same golf league for over 40 years.
He is survived by his wife, the former Ann R. Walsh, whom he married Feb. 13, 1965; three daughters, Cindra (Donald) Thompson, Christine Sannder-Locketti and her husband, William Locketti of Austintown, and Kelly (Ryan) Placer of Austintown; a son, Robert M. (Therese A.) Burns Jr. of Austintown; six grandchildren, David Thompson, Erin Burns, Rachel Burns, Megan Burns, Samantha Sander and Kacie Sander; and three great-grandchildren, Brayden, Kayden, and Kiara Thompson.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, the former Betty Jane Ellinger, who died in 1963, and a sister, Betty Schoenhut.

Helen S. Chizmar, 92
BOARDMAN A Mass of Resurrection will be Saturday at 12:30 p.m. at Saint Matthias Church for Helen S. Chizmar, 92, who died Wednesday morning at Greenbriar Healthcare Center.
Helen was born on Jan. 25, 1916 in Youngstown, a daughter of Peter and Mary Hnat Chizmar and lived in this area all her life.
Helen was a member of the church, its Infant Jesus of Prague Guild, its Sacred Heart and Rosary Society, The Quilters Club at the church and a member of the Slovak Catholic Sokols Wreath 54. She was employed as a floor manager at the Penn-Ohio Towel Company for many years, retiring in 1985.
Helen is survived by a brother, Michael (Marge) Chizmar of Canfield; three sisters, Mary Bednar of Villa Marie, Pa., Ann Lisko and Margaret Kuch, both of Boardman; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Peter and John Chizmar; and a sister, Kathryn Zalovich.
Friends may call at the church on Saturday from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Interment will take place at Lake Park Cemetery.

Anna M. Gocala, 87
POLAND Prayers will begin Saturday at 9 a.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home, Poland Chapel, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at 10 a.m. at St. Matthias Church for Anna M. Gocala, 87, who passed away Monday afternoon at the Shepherd of the Valley Care Center in Boardman.
Anna was born Dec. 29, 1920 in Campbell, the daughter of Anthony and Veronica Hutnansky Koly.
She was a 1938 graduate of Campbell Memorial High School and had worked at the Stambaugh Thompson Hardware Store in downtown Youngstown as a shipping clerk. She later worked at the Carrousel Snack Shop in the Southern Park Mall and had been a longtime babysitter for many families in the area. She was a member of St. Matthias Church and a past president of its Infant Jesus of Prague Guild.
Her husband, John H. Gocala, whom she married Nov. 23, 1946, died Jan. 20, 1976.
She is survived by a son, John J. Jack and his wife, Joan Gocala, of Poland; two grandchildren, Dr. Mary Jo (Scott) McIntyre and John (Kristin) Gocala Jr.; three great-grandchildren, Aiden and Jacqueline McIntyre, and Isabelle Gocala.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Helen Jazwinski and Mary Hanigovsky, and a brother, George Koly.
Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home, Poland Chapel, where the Infant Jesus of Prague Guild will have a prayer service at 3:45 p.m.

Isabel Hernandez, 74
YOUNGSTOWN There will be funeral services at noon on Saturday, Nov. 29 at the Rossi Brothers & Lellio Funeral Home, 4442 South Ave. in Boardman for Isabel Hernandez, 74, who passed away Monday evening, Nov. 24.
Isabel was born Nov. 3, 1934 in Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico, the daughter of Segundo Reyes and Ramona Hernandez.
She was employed by Brentwood Originals. Isabel loved to crochet and was a wonderful seamstress and cook.
She will always be remembered by her four children, Jose (Linda) Rosa of Youngstown, Lylianit (Kevin) Shellenberger of Hubbard, Ivan (Diana) Rosa of Twinsburg and Rubit (Rodney) Robinson of Youngstown; 18 grandchildren, Antonio, Jose, Naomi, Joshua, Michael, Stephanie and Alana, Enrique, Tiana and Selena, Ivan and Elijah, Anagalina, Rodney II, Megan, Marie, Chimene and Breanne; 16 great-grandchildren; and six sisters and brothers, Luz Maria Cruz, Irma (Reyes) Roman, Israel Reyes, Lenore Reyes, Ramon Reyes and Jose Luis Reyes.
Isabel was preceded in death by her parents and five brothers and sisters, Estelle Reyes, Juan Batista, Evangelina Reyes, Samuel Reyes and Efrain Reyes.

Merion Lemon Kennedy, 71
COLUMBUS There will be a funeral service at 1 p.m. on Monday at the F.D. Mason Memorial Funeral Home Inc., for Merion Lemon Kennedy, 71, formerly of Youngstown, who departed this life on Monday at his residence.
Mr. Kennedy was born May 2, 1937 in Youngstown, a son of Benjamin and Berta Pickard Kennedy.
He had been a truck driver for Leggett Trucking and owner and operator of O & M Cleaners.
He leaves his wife, the former Ossie O. Timpson, whom he married Jan. 21, 1956; children, Jacqueline B. Kennedy (Timothy) Brocker of North Hollywood, Calif., Marian L. Kennedy (Raymond) Howard of Palm Dale, Calif., Marvella Kennedy (Will) Smith of Long Beach, Calif., Tenise Y. (Keith Cox) Kennedy, Patreas Y. (Andrae Price) Kennedy and Melvin K. Kennedy, all of Columbus; adopted son, Tony (Debra) Hilton of Youngstown; brothers, Calvin and Curtis Kennedy, both of Youngstown and Warren Kennedy of Richmond, Va.; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
His parents and brothers, Napoleon, Benjamin, Jr. and Wilbur Kennedy, preceded him in death.

Victoria M. Lavanty, 69
STOW Victoria M. Lavanty, 69, died Nov. 25, 2008.
Born in New Castle, Pa., she had been a resident of Stow since 1963. She was a member of the Holy Family Catholic Church and had retired as a teacher from the Twinsburg School System.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry, who died in 1982; son, John who died in 2003; and her parents, John and Lucy Pia.
She is survived by her daughters, Maria (Stan) Regan, Deborah (Craig) Mancuso and Victoria Lavanty; sons, David (Lynda) and Scott Lavanty; grandchildren, Kyle, Brandon, Brittany, Julianne, Jessica and Samantha; and sister, Eva Retort.
The family would like to thank the caring staff at Stow Glen for their dedicated care.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday at 1 p.m. at the Holy Family Catholic Church.
Friends may call Friday from 11 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. at the Redmon Funeral Home.

Rudy E. Ohlin, 87
POLAND Services will be Saturday for Rudy E. Ohlin, 87, at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church in New Middletown at 10 a.m. He passed away Wednesday at Hospice House.
Rudy was born June 12, 1921, a son of George and Mary Jereb Ohlin.
He served in the Army Air Corp., during WWII in the 9th Air Force as a Tech Sergeant.
He married Joyce E. Famor on June 26, 1953. He lived in San Diego and Arizona before returning to the area in 1962.
Rudy was a contractor, developer and part owner, with his brothers, of Ohlin Brothers Lumber Co., which was established in 1945.
He was a member of St. Paul the Apostle Church, for which he donated the land for the original church. He was also very active in donating and helping the less fortunate in underdeveloped countries. He was a previous Board Member of the Mahoning National Bank. Rudy loved the outdoors and enjoyed hunting and fishing his whole life.
He leaves three sons, Russell E. (Leanne) Ohlin of New Middletown, Mark A. Ohlin of North Lima and Randy W. (Christine) Ohlin of New Middletown; four daughters, Kathryn A. (Frank) of Hanoverton, Mary June (Rod) Emerson of Springfield Township, Annie M. (Jim) Porter of Poland, and Tina E. (Ken) Cummings of Springfield; one sister, Mary A. Brentin of Poland; and 17 grandchildren.
Rudy was preceded in death by eight brothers, Frank, Joseph, Wint, Anthony, Woody, Louis, John, and Bill Ohlin; and three sisters, Helen Stebelton, Jenny Daubert, and an infant sister, Anne Ohlin.
Friends may call at St. Paul the Apostle Church in New Middletown on Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. and one hour before the service on Saturday from 9 to 10 a.m.

Harold R. Rice, 83
SPRINGFIELD TOWNSHIP Services will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Clemente Funeral Home in New Middletown for Harold R. Rice, 83, who passed away Wednesday morning.
Harold was born Dec. 3, 1924 in Petersburg, a son of Hugh and Edith Crum Rice. He lived in the area his whole life.
He worked for 32 years in the steel mills and retired from Sharon Steel. He served in the Navy, during WWII.
Harold was a member and past deacon at the Old Springfield United Church of Christ in New Middletown. He was a former member and elder at the Poland Presbyterian Church. He was a charter member of the Springfield Fire Department and Rescue Squad.
He was a realtor at Alpha Realty. He was a member of the Buckeye Coachman Camping Club, the New Middletown Sportsman Club, a leader in the Boy Scouts in New Middletown, a member and advisor of the New Middletown 4H Club and the Springfield Township Historical Society as a member and past president.
Harold leaves his wife, the former Jean E. Kariher, whom he married Aug. 3, 1946; two sons, James W. (Winona) Rice of New Middletown and John W. (Lynn) Rice of North Lima; one daughter, Linda (Chester) Surgenavic of North Lima; one sister, Ella Hixson of New Springfield; eight grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
Harold was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Charles and Alvin Rice; and one sister, Esther Lambright.

YOUNGSTOWN Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Gibson Heights Second Presbyterian Church, for Mrs. Lila C. Rice, 83, who died early Wednesday morning at the Hospice House.
Lila was born April 30, 1925 in Utica, N.Y. to the late Harold and Lila (Bryce) Wright and came to this area as a child.
She graduated from East High School, class of 1943, and from the Youngstown Hospital School of Nursing in 1946. Her professional career as a registered nurse started at the South Side Hospital. She was the director of nursing at Little Forest Medical Care Center, as well as at Park Vista. She retired in 1988.
Lila was a member of the Gibson Heights Second Presbyterian Church, where she was a deacon and Sunday School teacher.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Paul M. Rice Sr., they married Sept. 5, 1953, he died May 29, 1974. She was also preceded by two brothers, Walter and Harold Wright.
She is survived by her son, Paul M. (Diane) Rice Jr. of Poland, and two beloved granddaughters, Allison and Julie Rice of Poland. She also leaves her sister, Nancy Huggins of Pittsburgh.

Tyler D. Young, 22
CORTLAND Tyler D. Young, 22, passed away on Nov. 24, 2008 at his apartment in Morgantown, W.Va.
He was born the son of Douglas A. and Olive M. (Bloor) Young in Warren, on Sept. 12, 1986.
Tyler was currently a senior at West Virginia University.
He is survived by his parents of Cortland; sister, Miranda R. Young at home; and a brother, LCPL Brett D. Young (USMC) of Camp LeJeune, N.C.
Tyler was preceded in death by a sister, Kisha R. Young in 2004.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, Nov. 29, 2008 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Shafer-Winans Funeral Chapel in Cortland.

Theresa O. Zetts, 89
CAMPBELL Funeral services will be at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the Wasko Funeral Home and at 10 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, for Theresa O. Zetts, 89, who passed away peacefully Monday at her home.
Theresa was born Oct. 27, 1919 in Youngstown, the daughter of Frank and Rosina DeRocchis Campione and was a lifelong area resident.
She was a member of the church, the 1418 Auxiliary Seniors, the Campbell Seniors, Cub Scout leader for Pack 92, and volunteered at Villa Maria Community Center. She was employed at St. Elizabeth Health Center in the housekeeping department and also worked at Comet Cleaners.
Theresa enjoyed dancing, singing to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, working in her garden and sharing it with her neighbors and friends. She was an excellent cook and made the best kolachi in the world.
Her first husband, Samuel Solly Barillaire, whom she married Feb. 2, 1945, died April 5, 1945. Her second husband, Michael S. Zetts, whom she married Oct. 18, 1947, died April 28, 1988.
She leaves to cherish her memory her children, Mary Ann Barillaire-Sheen of New Castle, Pa., Frances (Dennis) Zetts-Bores of Newburg, George (Denise) of Campbell, Michael (Shirley) of Coitsville, John (Stephanie) of Austintown, Joseph (Nancy) of Campbell and Marcella (Mark) Zetts-Arillo of Kansas; sisters, Clara Casal-Woychik, Vera Texter and Mary Mazias, all of Campbell; a brother, Harold Campion of Florida; 19 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands; a daughter, Karen Zetts; a sister, Victoria Frazzini-Petrella; and a brother George Campion.
The Zetts family has entrusted their loved one to the care of the Wasko Funeral Home and will receive friends Friday from 4 to 8 p.m.
The family requests that memorial contributions be made to St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Theresas name to their Renovation and Improvement Fund.
