John E. Axe
YOUNGSTOWN After a courageous one year battle with a cancerous glioma brain tumor, John E. Axe, died Monday, Nov. 17, 2008.
John was born in New Wilmington, Pa., the first child of Margaret and Alex Axe. He was raised in western Pennsylvania and lived there until 1970, when he moved to Youngstown.
He holds a degree in Spanish studied from the Universidad of Valladolid in Spain and an AB and MA from Youngstown State University. He also had hours towards a PhD at the University of Akron. He taught Spanish for Penn State University in Sharon, Pa.
John was a professor of history at Youngstown State University for 25 years, and after his retirement from there worked part-time at Pat Catan arts and crafts store in Hermitage, Pa.
He was an award winning artist and the author of more than 30 books and thousands of magazine articles. These books and articles are about the hobbies of collecting dolls, toys, teddy bears and childrens series books. His artwork included designing teddy bears for the Merrythought Doll and Toy Company in England. For six terms, he was the editor of Doll News Magazine. In recent years, he contributed a large number of articles in book collectors magazines about the hobby of collecting and purchasing books from the early 20th Century. He was, currently, the president of the Friends of the Hubbard Library Association.
He is survived by his sister, Elizabeth Ann; his best friend, Bill; his three dogs, Mildred, Frances and Judy; his cat, Claude; and hundreds of friends worldwide.
He was preceded in death by his beloved sisters, Susan P. Axe and Patricia E. Axe; brothers, Robert Axe and Thomas Axe; and his parents.

Blanche Irene (Burton) Clarett, 98
NOVI, MICH. Blanche Irene (Burton) Clarett, 98, passed away late Sunday evening, Nov. 16, 2008.
She was born July 8, 1910 in Franklin, Pa., the daughter of Bessie and Harry Hawkins. She was the oldest of three siblings.
Her husband, Samuel Jones Clarett, whom she married on March 14, 1940, survives.
She attended East High School in Youngstown and taught kindergarten at the Bethel House. She was a ward clerk at St. Elizabeth Medical Center and was a Mahoning County Sheriff dispatcher. She retired from the Mahoning County Sheriffs office in 1976. Blanche was an Avon representative for many years as well.
She was also a member of the Price Memorial AME Zion Church. One of her greatest joys was music. Blanche was a member of the Youngstown Symphony Chorus directed by John Krueger and a member of the Price Memorials adult choir.
She is survived by her husband, Sam Clarett of Novi, Mich.; son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Della Burton of Youngstown; daughters, Shirley Davis of Bloomfield Hills, Mich., Donna and Jimmie Comer of Farmington Hills, Mich. and Dorothy and Thomas Reed of Lathrup Village, Mich.; daughter-in-law, Joyce Burton of Youngstown; 12 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Clarett was preceded in death by her father, Harry Hawkins; mother, Bessie Hawkins Burke; stepfather, Floyd Burke; sister, Annabelle Burke; and son, Hyland Burton Jr.
Friends may call from 9 to 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 22, 2008, at the Price Memorial AME Zion Church, where funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Interment will follow at the Tod Homestead Cemetery.

Helen M. Dyke-Cmil, 84
CANFIELD There are no services or calling hours for Helen M. Dyke-Cmil, 84, who died late Wednesday morning at St. Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown.
She was born Oct. 6, 1924 in Salem, a daughter of Fred S. and Iva Mae (Harold) Lipp. She resided in this area all of her life.
She worked as an assembler for Suburban Aluminum in Struthers for 14 years until her retirement. She was a longtime member of the Good Hope Lutheran Church in Boardman. She loved her family and most of all spending time with her grandchildren.
Her first husband, Glenn G. Dyke, whom she married in 1942, died Feb. 10, 1978.
She is survived by two sons, Glenn D. Don (Sandi) Dyke of Canfield, with whom she made her home and Robert A. (Carolyn) Dyke of Dallas. She also leaves behind five grandchildren, Robert Dyke of Youngstown, Shawn Dyke of Girard, Jason (Kaara) Dyke of Dallas, Jodi Lyn (Michael) McBride of Austintown and Courtney (Scott) Boyd of Dallas; and 10 great-grandchildren, Ryan, Britnee, Shawn Jr., Blayne, Paige, Rylee, Elijah, Judson, Chase and Chance.
Besides her first husband, Helen was preceded in death by her parents; her second husband, Raymond Cmil, who died in 1997; four brothers, Luther, Lealand, Paul and Kalmer Lipp; and a sister, Mrs. Russell Forney.

Joyce Sayers Eddy, 80
NILES Joyce Sayers Eddy, 80, of 1490 Tripodi Circle, passed away peacefully at home with her loving family around her on Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2008, at 5 p.m.
She was born in Niles on July 18, 1928 to William and Gladys (Beek) Sayers and lived in Niles all her life.
Joyce studied at Flora Stone Mather College and was a graduate from the Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing, receiving her bachelor of science degree in nursing from Western Reserve University. For several years, she was the nursing arts instructor at Forum Health Trumbull Memorial Hospital. Later she worked and retired from the Green Cross Hospital in Warren to raise her family.
Joyce was a member of St. Stephen Church and very active at St. Stephen School throughout her childrens education. She cherished and enjoyed time spent with her family, children and grandchildren.
She is survived by four children, Dr. William S. (Deanna) Eddy of Niles, Bernard L. (Terese) Eddy of Clayton, Calif., Marcella A. Marcie (Mark) Peterson of Wheaton, Ill., and Dr. Christopher M. (Denise) Eddy of Niles; sister, Harriet Hill of Naples, Fla.; 10 grandchildren, Lauren Eddy, William Bill Eddy, Michael Eddy, Bernard Bernie Eddy, Brenden Eddy, Alexis Eddy, Nicolette Eddy, Erin Peterson, Patrick Peterson and Matthew Peterson.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Bernard C. Eddy, whom she married on Dec. 26, 1953, and passed away on Jan. 31, 1988, and a granddaughter, Alyssa Eddy.
Calling hours will be today, Nov. 21, 2008, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Holeton-Yuhasz Funeral Home.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday, Nov. 22, 2008, at noon at St. Stephen Church, with Rev. Thomas Kraszewski as celebrant.
Burial will be at St. Stephen Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Valley, St. Stephen Church or the HMHP Foundation at St. Josephs Hospital in Warren.

Joseph M. Hovanes Sr., 93
GEORGIA Funeral services are Monday at 9 a.m. at the Kubina Yuhasz Funeral Home, 5925 Market Street in Boardman, and at 9:30 a.m. at St. Matthias Church in Youngstown, for Joseph M. Hovanes Sr., 93, formerly of Youngstown, who died Friday, Nov. 14, in Austell, Ga.
Mr. Hovanes was born Feb. 1, 1915 in Johnstown, Pa., a son of Michael and Florence Komara Hovanes and moved to Youngstown as a small child.
He served with the U. S. Army during WWII. Joseph was a member of St. Matthias Church. He also was a life member of both the Disabled American Veterans and the V.F.W., as well as a member of the Blind Veterans Association. Joseph was employed at Republic Steel as a tool and die repairman for more than 30 years, retiring in 1975.
He is survived by his son, Joseph M. (Cathy) Hovanes Jr. of Marietta, Ga. and by his three grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, the former Mildred L. Frankford, whom he married Aug. 30, 1941, and who died Jan. 6, 1998; his sister, Mary Zevchik; and his brothers, Michael (Leo), Charles, John, and Robert Hovanes.
Friends may call at the funeral home Sunday from 3 to 6 p.m., where a prayer service will be held at 2:45 p.m.

Bernice E. Mayer, 83
AUSTINTOWN Prayers will begin Saturday at 9:30 a.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home, Austintown Chapel followed by a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph Church for Mrs. Bernice E. Mayer, 83, who passed away Wednesday evening at Maplecrest Nursing Home.
Bernice was born Feb. 9, 1925 in Louisville, Ohio.
She was a graduate of South High School, and later worked at the G.E. Lamp Plant in Youngstown.
She was a homemaker, a member of St. Joseph Church and enjoyed crochet, ceramics, baking and shopping.
Her husband, Leo W. Mayer, whom she married Feb. 7, 1947, died June 27, 1995.
She is survived by a daughter, Norma L. (David) Garchar of Struthers; two sons, Leo W. Mayer of Austintown and Dale E. (Patty) Mayer of Columbiana; a sister, Rita (Cliff) Luther of North Carolina; a brother, Russell Warner of Alliance; and nine grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a granddaughter.

Ronald W. McGuire, 56
MINERAL RIDGE Ronald W. McGuire, 56, died at his home Wednesday afternoon.
Ron was born June 22, 1952 in Hamilton, the son of Delmus and Dorothy (Jacob) McGuire.
Ron had worked for the U.S. Government as a letter carrier for 27 years, working out of the Austintown Post Office. He enjoyed gardening, playing chess and was a talented artist.
Ron is survived by his twin children, Bryon McGuire of Philadelphia and Jaime McGuire at home; his mother of Austintown; and three siblings, Connie Beckwith of LaPort, Ind., Donna Cole McGuire of Austintown and Doug McGuire of Alliance.
He was preceded in death by his father.
There were no calling hours or services.

Mary was born Oct. 10, 1928 in Savuto, Provincia Di Cosenza, Italy, the daughter of Angelo Buffone and Nina Ferano.
She was a homemaker and faithful member of the church. Mary truly loved her family and her life evolved around them.
She leaves her beloved husband, Rocco Melia, whom she married in 1957; she will always be remembered and missed by her two sons, Joseph Melia of Boardman and Michael Melia and his wife, Michele of Struthers; and two granddaughters, Nicole and Angela Melia.
Besides her parents, Mary was preceded in death by her brothers, Joseph, Leo and Richard Buffone, and a sister, Carmella Buffone.

BETHEL PARK, PA. Mabel Partington, 96, passed away Sunday, Nov. 16, 2008.
She was the wife of the late Robert Partington; beloved mother of Janet (Frank) Donadee of Youngstown and the late James Partington; mother-in-law of Amy Partington; sister of Dorothy of Montana, Calif., Raymond Takaht of Liberty Boro and the late Frances Bazzone; grandmother of nine; great-grandmother of 13; and great-great-grandmother of four.
Mabel was a lifelong Pittsburgh Steelers and Pirates fan.
Visitation will be today from 2 to 4 p.m. at the David J. Henney Funeral Home, 6364 Library Road (Route 88) in Library, Pa., where funeral service will be today at 6:30 p.m.
Dolores J. Provenzale, 70
POLAND Dolores J. Provenzale, 70, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2008, at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland after a brief illness.
She was born Jan. 1, 1938 in Youngstown, a daughter of the late John Yanno and Rose (Fetch) Yanno.
She worked for the Mahoning County Job and Family Services, retiring after 20 years of service. She was an avid bingo player and enjoyed her trips to Mountaineer.
She was Mama Dee to all that knew her. She was a devout wife and mother who loved and cared for everyone. She will be loved and missed and will be in our hearts forever.
She is survived by her husband, Michael Provenzale of Poland, whom she married Nov. 17, 1956; son, Anthony (Theresa) Provenzale of Canfield; daughter, Donna Provenzale (Chris Muscatello) of Youngstown; sister, Rose Estelle (Joseph) Gentile of Campbell; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and her Little Lauren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her son, Michael; her in-laws, Donna and Anthony Provenzale; her brothers, Anthony Yanno, Dominic Yanno, Floyd Yanno, Gerald Yanno and John Yanno; and her sisters, Mary Busonik, Jenny Lissi and Susan Pikofsky.

Audrey Elaine Reed, 77
BRISTOLVILLE Audrey Elaine Reed, 77, died Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2008, at St. Joseph Medical Center.
She was born April 3, 1931 in Rowan County, Ky., a daughter of the late Chester Littleton and the late Ethel Blevins Littleton.
Audrey was employed at Ohio Lamp for over 30 years, working as an inventory clerk. She was a member of the Champion Christian Church and worked with the youth of the church. She loved her flower garden, cooking, camping, bowling, and especially loved playing with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, Thomas E. Reed, whom she married Nov. 8, 1951, Audrey is survived by her daughter, Deborah D. (Dennis) Patchin of Champion; son, Steve (Maria) Reed of Champion; four grandchildren, Denise Patchin, Heather (Les) Hathaway, Dr. Steven Reed, and Michael Reed; two great-grandchildren, Michalina and Kellina Hathaway; sisters, Martha Frances Hogge of Dayton, Ruby Roberson of Moorehead, Ky., and Virginia (Ray) Blais of Pensacola, Fla.; and her brother, Cles Littleton of Braden, Fla.
Preceding her in death were her parents.
Services will be held at 9:30 a.m. at the Champion Christian Church on Saturday, Nov. 22, 2008, where Rev. Kenneth Hopkins will officiate.
Friends may call at the Carl W. Hall Funeral Home from 5 to 8 p.m., today, Nov. 21, and a half hour prior to the service at the church.
Burial will be at Champion Township Cemetery in Champion.

Jeanne M. Smith, 83
NORTH LIMA Funeral services will be today, Nov. 21, at 1 p.m. at the Thompson Funeral Home, 4221 Market St. in Boardman, for Jeanne M. Smith, 83, who died Wednesday, Nov. 19, at Hampton Woods Nursing Center.
She was born July 25, 1925 in Beaver Falls, Pa., the daughter of the late Harry and Clara Allshouse Struble.
She came to this area as a child and graduated from The Rayen School and from the Youngstown School of Nursing.
Jeanne worked as a registered nurse at St. Elizabeth Health Center and Forum Health Northside Medical Center in Youngstown. She attended the Old North Church of Canfield.
Jeanne is survived by her husband, Attorney Eugene R. Smith, whom she married on June 2, 1947; three daughters, Judge Beth Smith (Tom Compton) of North Lima, Rachel (Joseph) Parlink of Boardman, and Attorney Rebecca (Ron) Albers of Columbus; a sister, Dorothy Smegal of Youngstown; five grandchildren, Jolie (Alan) Johnson, Dr. Alison (Joseph) Protain, Michael Albers, Oliver (Danielle) Albers and Mackenzie Compton; and three great-grandchildren, Jacob Johnson, Sarah Johnson, and Josie Grace Protain.
Besides her parents, Jeanne was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Berry.

Erna Stere, 88
CANFIELD A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Tabernacle Evangelical Presbyterian Church, 2432 S. Raccoon Road in Austintown, for Erna Stere, 88, who passed away Wednesday in Park Vista after a short illness.
Erna was born July 5, 1920 in Youngstown, the daughter of William and Katherine (Linder) Brenner and was a lifelong area resident.
She was a graduate of The Rayen School class of 1938. She was a homemaker, a member of the church and its quilting circle. Ernas hobbies included sewing, quilting, gardening and canning. She was known for her cooking and baking skills, and was also an avid reader.
She leaves three children, Boyd L. (Ann) Stere of Kent, Nancy (Richard) Scullin of New Waterford and Lee Stere of Canfield; two grandchildren, Sean Scullin of New Waterford and Katherine (Joel) King of Canton; and two brothers, Walter Brenner of Idaho and Arnold Brenner of Boardman.
Besides her parents, Erna was preceded in death by her husband, Clifford Stere, whom she married Feb. 5, 1949 and passed away Oct. 30, 2007; a brother, William Brenner; and a sister, Gertrude Howard-Wilson.
The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the church.
Arrangements are being handled by the Lane Funeral Home, Canfield Chapel.

Phillip Edward Eddy Sullivan, 71
SALEM Phillip Edward Eddy Sullivan, 71, of 782 Benton Road, died at 7:40 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2008, at his home.
He was born Aug. 13, 1937 in Renova, Pa., the son of the late Donald Sullivan and Valeria (Serbanuta) Sullivan Emelo.
Until his retirement in 2001, Eddy had been employed for 30 years as a data analyst at Warren Consolidated Incorporated Steel in Warren.
He graduated from St. Paul Catholic School and was a 1955 graduate of Salem High School before attending Youngstown State College for two years. He served in the U.S. Navy during peacetime from 1956 to 1959.
Eddy was a member of the Salem Colts and Fillies Saddle Club and was a bull rider in rodeos. He also played guitar and sang at Stephanics in Kensington and at the Wagon Wheel in East Palestine.
He was a member of the Salem Police Auxiliary and the Color Guard of the Auxiliary. Eddy was also a member of the Salem Italian American Club, the Independent Hose Company and the Salem AmVets Post 45. He was a frequent blood donor giving multiple donations of blood.
His wife, Janet (Tohm) Sullivan, whom he married May 27, 1960 survives him, along with a son, Edward Mike (Patrice) Sullivan of Salem; two daughters, Jennifer Jeni Sullivan of Salem and Karen (Donald) Lawrence of Grand Prairie, Texas; three grandchildren; and his stepfather, Louis Emelo of Salem.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the Stark Memorial Funeral Home with Father Joseph Rudjak officiating.
Calling hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home with a Vigil prayer service held at 7:45 p.m.
Burial will be at the Grandview Cemetery with full military honors provided by the Salem V.F.W. Post 892 and the Salem AmVets Post 45 Burial Group.

Patricia L. Yuhas, 75
WARREN Patricia L. Yuhas, 75, of Gladstone Road, entered peacefully into the arms of the Lord on Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2008, at 6:24 p.m. at the Trumbull Memorial Hospital in Warren, surrounded by her family, following a lengthy illness.
Patricia was born the loving daughter of the late Otis and Mary K. (Ervin) Martin on Nov. 6, 1933, in Preston, W.Va. and was a resident of this area since 1965, coming here from Austintown.
Patricia was a graduate of Bruceton Mills High School in West Virginia and was a homemaker. She also was a member of the Crossroads Church in Austintown and had enjoyed gardening and the outdoors in her spare time.
On June 1, 1963, Patricia was united in marriage with George M. Yuhas and shared 45 loving years together.
Memories of Patricia will be remembered and cherished by her loving family, husband, George; sons, James B. Benson of Goodyear, Ariz. and Ronald Benson of Newton Falls; a daughter, Tamala Hartz of Columbiana; four grandchildren, Cassandra and Corey Hatman of Columbiana, Robin Benson of Walton, Okla., and Penny Stewart of Phoenix; and four great-grandchildren, Jonathan and Ashton Grabowski of Walton and Ryley and Kaley Stewart of Phoenix.
Preceding her in death were her parents and a grandchild.
Funeral services for Patricia will be 11 a.m., Monday, Nov. 24, 2008, at the Crossroads Church in Austintown.
The family will receive and greet friends on Sunday, Nov. 23, 2008, at the church from 5 to 7 p.m.
Officiating the services will be the Pastor David Watkins.
Burial will follow at the North Jackson Cemetery.
