Janet Lee Currie, 65

AUSTINTOWN - Janet Lee Currie, 65, passed away Tuesday morning, Nov. 11, 2008 at Hospice House.

Janet was born June 13, 1943 in Steubenville, a daughter of the late Theodore R. and Thelma Henderson, and came to the Youngstown area in the early 1960s.

She was a graduate of Steubenville High School and ITT Technical Institute.

Janet held various jobs throughout her lifetime and enjoyed fishing, bowling, sewing, computer games, and surfing the Internet.

She leaves her fiancé, Ronald F. Berry of Youngstown; a daughter, Chantae Lynch of Columbus; a sister, Audrey (Clement) Carey of Mingo; two grandchildren, Jermaine and Jovaughn Lynch; her nieces and nephews, Kaaren Sample, Cynthia Sims (James) Felton, Denise Carey, Vernon (Rosemarie) Sims, Ronald (Serbrenia) Sims, Joseph (Jeannette) Sims, and Keith (Deborah) Sims; and many great-nieces and great-nephews.

A sister, Naomi Sims, a nephew, Dwight Sims, and a niece, Tonya Sims, are deceased.

Family and friends may call from 10.30 to 11:30 a.m. Monday, Nov. 17, 2008 at Kinnick Funeral Home, 477 N. Meridian Road, Youngstown, where funeral services will take place at 11:30 a.m.

Interment will be at Union Cemetery in Steubenville.

William H. Evick, 94

AUSTINTOWN - William H. Evick, 94, formerly of North Raccoon Road, passed away Saturday morning, Nov. 15, 2008, at Meridian Arms Living Center.

Mr. Evick was born June 22, 1914 in Youngstown, a son of the late Stephen and Lucille Buchenic Evich, and was a lifelong area resident.

He served for three years with the Civilian Conservation Corps during the 1930s, mostly in California, and upon returning to Youngstown, was hired by Republic Steel in Warren. Bill worked at Republic in the cold strip department and retired as a roller in 1976 after 40 years.

Mr. Evick was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Austintown, and was a member of St. George Lodge No. 66, Croatian Fraternal Union.

Bill loved to vacation in Hawaii, and his goodbye word to everyone was “Aloha.” He enjoyed watching the New York Yankees play baseball, and enjoyed watching the Pittsburgh Steelers.

He leaves two sons, William H. Evick II and Richard Paul (Jan) Evick, both of Austintown; a grandson, William R. (Beth) Evick of Santa Barbara, Calif.; and two great-grandchildren, Christian William Evick and Sydney Hayden Evick, both of Santa Barbara.

Two sisters, Genevieve Marquette and Helen Hapcic, and a brother, Raymond Evich, are deceased.

Family and friends may call on Tuesday, Nov. 18, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. at Kinnick Funeral Home, 477 N. Meridian Road in Youngstown, where funeral services will follow at 11:30 a.m.

Interment will take place at Resurrection Cemetery in Austintown.

Memorial contributions may be made in Mr. Evick’s name to Immaculate Heart of Mary Church.

Carl Leonard Folk, 83

LIBERTY - Private family services will be held at a later date for Carl Leonard Folk, 83, formerly of Liberty, who passed away Saturday morning at Essex One Care Center in Salem.

Carl was born May 20, 1925 in Somerset County, Pa., the son of Ernest and Violet Sumey Folk.

He moved to Niles from Pittsburgh in 1949 and worked as a welder for the H.K. Porter Electric Company in Warren for 25 years before retiring. Carl was an avid bowler and had bowled several 300 games.

Carl also built and raced Stock and Sprint Cars. At one time he had designed and built the largest mobile air compressors in the area.

He is survived by his wife, the former June Tewell, whom he married Oct. 28, 1944; a daughter, Nancy and husband Bob O’Hara of Green Township; and a son, Carl L. Folk Jr. of Florida.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by infant twin brothers.

Carl’s family would like to thank the staff at Essex One for their loving care during Carl’s stay.

Theodore T. Kovalan, 81

YOUNGSTOWN – Theodore T. Kovalan, 81, passed away early Friday morning, Nov. 14, 2008, his 55th wedding anniversary, at Forum Health Northside Medical Center.

Theodore was born April 19, 1927 in Youngstown, a son of the late Michael and Anna Smigovsky Kovalan, and was a lifelong area resident.

Mr. Kovalan served in the U.S. Navy during WWII, and was employed with Ohio Bell and AT&T for 42 years, retiring as a repairman in 1988.

He was a member of the Holy Name of Jesus Church, and a member of the Telephone Pioneers.

Ted enjoyed golfing and clubmaking, and was a member of the Golf Clubmakers Association and the Professional Clubmakers Society. He also enjoyed train travel.

Ted leaves his beloved wife, Lena Nenadich Kovalan, whom he married Nov. 14, 1953 at St. Lawrence Church in Hillsville, Pa.; two sons, John (Debra) Kovalan of Vermillion and Robert (Carla) Kovalan of Austintown; five daughters, Patricia (Scott) Shope of Charlotte, N.C., Jane Kovalan of Youngstown, Nancy (Mark) Iovenette of Rocklin, Calif., Mary (Joseph) Schesler of Youngstown, and Joann Antiqua of Elk Grove, Calif.; seven grandchildren, Lisa Kovalan, Jennifer Dudek, John Kovalan Jr., Robert Kovalan Jr., Shaena Kovalan, Benjamin Miller, and Katie Antiqua; and three great-grandchildren.

Ted will be truly missed by all who knew and loved him.

A brother, Elmer Kovalan, is deceased.

Family and friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m., Monday, Nov. 17, at Kinnick Funeral Home, 477 N. Meridian Road in Youngstown.

Funeral services will begin at 9 a.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home, and continue at 9:30 a.m. at the Holy Name of Jesus Church in Youngstown.

Marion A. O’Donnell, 85

MCDONALD – Marion A. O’Donnell, 85, died Friday, Nov. 14, 2008, at St. Elizabeth Health Center.

Marion was born May 30, 1923, a daughter of the late Robert and Margaret Bryson Halliday, in Sewickley, Pa.

She was a homemaker had worked for Schwebel Bakery and Grant’s in downtown Youngstown. A member of Woodland Park United Methodist Church in McDonald, she was a former Sunday School teacher and Den Mother for Cub Scouts. Marion enjoyed baking and sewing and was an avid bowler for many years.

She is survived by her son, Daniel O’Donnell of McDonald; daughter, Jean May of Liberty Township; eight grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William E. O’Donnell, whom she married March 12, 1948 and who died Sept. 25, 1997; a son, John J. Martin; and sisters, Mary Tanner, Helen Wallis and Jean Halliday.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Nov. 18, at 11 a.m. at the Blackstone Funeral Home in Girard, where visitation will be Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. and also on Tuesday one hour prior to the service.

Interment will take place at Resurrection Cemetery.


Harold E. “Whitey” Pugh, 84

VIENNA TOWNSHIP – Harold E. “Whitey” Pugh, 84, died on Friday, Nov. 14, 2008, at his home.

Mr. Pugh was born in Canton on April 2, 1924, a son of Ben and Ruby (Scott) Pugh.

Harold graduated from Vienna High School in 1943 and then married the former Betty Garrard on Jan. 9, 1944. Together they shared 64 years of marriage.

Harold worked for Brainard Strapping in Warren, as a machinist for 17 years, before his retirement in 1985. Whitey also had owned and operated Diamond Topsoil in Vienna for over 30 years.

Harold will be sadly missed by his wife, Betty; three daughters, Patricia (James) Zydyk of Chagrin Falls, Rebecca (Gary) Gibson of Vienna and Barbara (Thomas) Gardner, also of Vienna; three grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two brothers, William Pugh of Richmond, Va. and Ben Pugh Jr. of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; and two sisters, Bettie LaHaye of Zepherhills, Fla. and Helen Clower of Vienna.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Private family funeral services will be held Monday at the Lane Funeral Homes, Madasz Chapel in Brookfield.

Burial will be at Vienna Township Cemetery.

The family suggests in lieu of flowers, that contributions may be made in Harold’s memory to Hospice of the Valley Trumbull Chapter in Warren.

Florence N. Rich, 89

HILLSVILLE – Florence N. Rich, 89, died Friday, Nov. 14, 2008, peacefully, of natural causes at Clare Bridge of Austintown.

Mrs. Rich was born Tuesday, April 29, 1919 in Hillsville, a daughter of the late Louis and Angelica Yerpoli Polito.

She was a homemaker, and a lifelong a member of the St. Lawrence Church, Christ the King Parish, of Hillsville. She devoted her life to her family and her church, and will be sadly missed.

Her husband, Joseph J. Rich, passed away died Nov. 26, 2006 after 67 years of marriage.

She is survived by one sister, Theresa Zappia of Struthers; one brother, Tony (Connie) Polito of Struthers; one sister-in-law, Mary Polito of Boardman; numerous nieces, nephews; numerous great-nieces and nephews; and several great-great-nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by one brother, Nick Polito of Boardman.

Friends will be received 5 to 7 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 18, at the Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home, Poland Chapel.

Funeral services will be held at St. Lawrence Church, Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2008, at 10:30 a.m. with Rev. James Downs officiating. Everyone please meet at church.

Entombment will follow at the Green Haven Memorial Gardens.

Henry “H.P.” Soccorsy, 83

CANFIELD - Henry P. Soccorsy, 83, passed away early Saturday morning, Nov. 15, 2008, at his home with his family at his side.

Henry, popularly known as “H.P.,” was born Jan. 19, 1925 in Youngstown, a son of the late William and Mary Dominic Soccorsy, and was a lifelong area resident.

Mr. Soccorsy served in the U.S. Army during WWII, and was the owner/operator of 4-Wheels Auto Sales in Boardman for many years until his recent retirement.

He enjoyed playing music, food, socializing, and most importantly, spending time with his family and friends, especially his grandchildren.

Mr. Soccorsy leaves his beloved wife, Nancy Miller Soccorsy, with whom he shared his life for more than 25 years; four stepchildren, John Miller of Columbus, Lynn (Scott) Neilsen of North Lima, Jeff (Tina) Miller of Poland, Ohio, and Dan (Melissa) Miller of Poland, Ohio; 10 grandchildren, who affectionately called him “Ba”; a brother, C. Raymond (Alice) Soccorsy of Canfield; a sister-in-law, Antoinette Soccorsy of Boardman; and many beloved nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

H.P. will be truly missed by all who knew and loved him.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Anthony and Amato Soccorsy; a sister, Marie Byrd; and a sister-in-law, Josephine Soccorsy.

Elizabeth “Bessie” Spangel

YOUNGSTOWN – There will be a Mass of Christian Burial on Monday, Nov. 17, at 10 a.m. at St. Columba Cathedral for Elizabeth “Bessie” Spangel, who died Wednesday evening at her residence.

Bessie was born in Londonderry, Vt., the daughter of Harry L. and Mary M. Halligan Thrasher, and came to Youngstown when she was a child.

She attended St. Columba Grade School, Ursuline High School and Youngstown State University. Bessie was employed for 20 years at General Motors Corporation, BOC Lordstown, in the car plant cushion room. She had been an active member of the United Auto Workers, UAW Local 1112, for 18 years. She served on the Women’s Committee and was a trustee on the Executive Board of the Columbiana, Mahoning and Trumbull counties (CMT) UAW CAP (Community Action Program) Council. This is the political arm of the UAW. She had served three terms as state President of the Coalition of Labor Union Women and five terms as president of the Mahoning/Trumbull Chapter of the organization.

She was past president of the Mahoning County Division of the Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians; in 1982, she was chosen Mahoning County A.O.H. “Irish Woman of the Year” and was a lifetime member of the National Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians. She was a member of I.A.A.S., of the St. Patrick Parade Committee, and past treasurer of the gathering of the Irish Clan.

Bessie was involved with several democratic organizations, Mahoning County Federated Women’s Club, John F. Kennedy Women’s Federated Club, Tri-County Federated Club and Federated Democratic Women of Ohio, where in 2002 she was State Honoree. She had served as a delegate several times to the Ohio State Democratic Convention as an alternate delegate of Sen. Edward Kennedy to the 1980 Democratic Convention in New York City. In 1986 she was chosen by the John F. Kennedy Club as Mahoning County’s “Democratic Woman of the Year.”

Bessie is survived by two daughters, Joyce Kale-Pesta and Sharon Sabatka, both of Youngstown; a sister, Laura Johnson of Youngstown; eight grandchildren, Robert W., Gregory L. and Geoffrey Kale, Janis, Carrie and Abigail Spangel, and Frank Devin and Anthony Michael Sabatka; and five great-grandchildren.

Besides her parents and husband, Steven P., she was preceded in death by a son, Richard Sangel; a sister, Harriet Thrasher; and a brother, William Thrasher.

Family and friends may call today, Nov. 16, from 3 to 7 p.m. and from 9 to 9:30 a.m. Monday at the McVean, Hughes & McClurkin Funeral.

The Ladies A.O.H. will have a prayer service today at 6:30 p.m.

Larry R. Strozier, 57

YOUNGSTOWN – Services will be Tuesday, Nov. 18, 2008, at 11 a.m. at the L.E. Black, Phillips & Holden Funeral Home for Mr. Larry R. Strozier, 57, who departed this life Thursday, Nov. 13, 2008, at St. Elizabeth Health Center.

Mr. Strozier was born March 11, 1951 in Youngstown, a son of Robert and Odessa Robinson Strozier.

He had worked for the U.S. Steel Corporation and as a construction worker with Labor’s Local 125. He was a member of Word in Action (formerly True Vine Ministry) and loved all sports, especially fishing.

He leaves to cherish his memory, his beloved wife, the former Janice Mitchell, whom he married March 22, 1975; his mother, Odessa Strozier of Youngstown; four brothers, Terry of Mineral Ridge, and Ralph, Bobby, and Christopher, all of Youngstown; a sister, Sharon Peake of Youngstown; nine grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father; two stepsons, Vincent R. Thomas and Ronald W. Thomas; two sisters, Lois Strozier and Margaret Pettiford; and two brothers, Melvin and Samuel.

Friends may call Tuesday from 10 to 11 a.m. at the funeral home.

Mary E. Whalen, 94

BOARDMAN – Prayers will begin at 10 a.m. Monday at the Fox Funeral Home followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. at Saint Dominic Church celebrated by Father Richard Jastrezebski, O.P., for Mary E. Whalen, 94, who died Saturday morning at Shepherd of the Valley.

Mrs. Whalen was born April 29, 1914, in Youngstown, the daughter of John and Amelia Buser Wagner. She was a 1931 graduate of The Rayen School and had worked at Kling’s Bakery.

Mary was a member of the church, its Rosary Altar Society and the 500 Card Club.

Her husband, Daniel R. Whalen, whom she married in 1944, died in 1974.

She leaves a daughter, Jeanne (Terrence) Jones of Clark, Pa.; a son, Raymond Whalen of Poland; and two grandchildren, Theresa Jones and Deborah Ortiz.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter-in-law, Mary Whalen, and a brother, John Wagner.

Friends may call from 9 to 10 a.m. Monday at the funeral home.
