Paul E. Bradel, 82

“Together Again”

FREDONIA, PA. – Paul E. Bradel, 82, formerly of Moon Township, lost his battle with cancer on Wednesday, Nov. 12, 2008, at the Hospice House in Poland.

He was born May 23, 1926 in Sewickley, Pa.,the son of Jacob and Mary Bradel.

Paul was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corp where he served from 1944 to 1946, and held a deep love for his country. He was a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh and retired from U.S. Steel in 1982 with 31 years of service as the vice president of Production Planning.

Paul had many hobbies and talents. He had a love of antique cars and racing. He was a gardener and a talented woodworker, crafting many pieces of furniture for both family and friends. One of his greatest loves was the game of golf. He and his wife, Helen, both said that those were some of the best years of their lives and Paul was proud to have had five holes in one. He was also proud to have played seven courses in Scotland.

His wife, Helen, whom he married Aug. 6, 1949, passed away Aug. 29, 1997.

He will be sadly missed by his daughters, Tevis DiMascio and her husband, Terry of Boardman, Amy Heiles and her husband, David of Pittsburgh; grandchildren, Christopher and Todd DiMascio, Adle’ and Alayna Keeling, George Jacob Hart, and Andrew Heiles; and friend and companion, Gladys Miller of Vermilion.

A daughter, Deann, passed away in 2007. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Pearl; and a brother, Edward.

Friends will be received from 4 to 7 p.m. on Friday and from 10 to 10:45 a.m. on Saturday at the Loutzenhiser-Jordan Colonial Funeral Home, 366-368 S. Main St., Greenville, Pa.

The funeral service will be at 11 a.m., Saturday at the funeral home with Rev. Martin M. Roth, pastor of the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, officiating.

Military honors by V.F.W. Post No. 3374 will follow the service.

Burial will be private, on Monday at the Sewckley, Pa. Cemetery.

Anthony D. Costarell, 94

“Together Again”

POLAND – A memorial service will be held on Sunday, Nov. 16, at 4 p.m. at the Rossi Brothers & Lellio Funeral Home, 4442 South Ave. in Boardman for Anthony D. Costarell, 94, who passed away Saturday, Nov. 8.

Anthony was born June 13, 1914 in Youngstown, the son of John and Domenica (Frisina) Costarell

He was a 1933 graduate of South High School. Anthony served his country with the U.S. Army during WWII. He was employed as a truck driver for Youngstown Wholesale Grocery.

His wife, the former Elizabeth Bednar, whom he married July 13, 1940, passed away Sept. 18, 1994.

Anthony will always be remembered by his children, Daniel A. (Janet) Costarell of Seffner, Fla., Judith A. (George) Davis of Poland and Kathy A. (Ed) Scharrer of Lebanon; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and his sister, Evangelene (Ralph) Barbato Jr. of Boardman.

Besides his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Joseph P. and Frank D. Costarell; and his sister, Mary Quatro.

Christine Hermes, 79

BOARDMAN - Christine Hermes, 79, died Sunday, Nov. 9, 2008, at the Hospice House.

Mrs. Hermes was born Sunday, April 7, 1929 in Alibunar, Yugoslavia, a daughter of Joseph and Maria Schwemlein Schwarz.

She was a homemaker, who loved sewing, knitting and most of all spending time with her husband, children, grandchildren and great-granddaughter.

She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Michael Hermes, whom she married Sept 20, 1952; one son, Michael J. Hermes of Poland; one daughter, Christine (Michael) Skeens of Boardman; a brother, Joseph (Elizabeth) Schwarz of Fairview Park; four grandchildren, Michael Hermes of Boardman, Donald Hermes of Struthers, and Aaron Skeens and Ryan Skeens, both of Boardman; and one great-granddaughter, Aubrey Hermes of Boardman.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by one sister, Louise Wilsbach.

Funeral services will be at the Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home, Poland Chapel, Saturday, Nov. 15, 2008 at 11 a.m., where family and friends will be received from 10 to 10:45 a.m. prior to the service.

Mary Janosik, 86

YOUNGSTOWN – Mary Janosik, 86, formerly of North Maryland Avenue, passed away early Monday morning, Nov. 10, 2008, at Hospice House in Poland Township following a brief illness.

Mary was born Jan. 14, 1922 in Czechoslovakia, the daughter of the late Stephen and Anna Janosik Janosik, and came to America and Youngstown as a child in 1928.

She worked as a packer for Superior Beverage for 22 years from 1949 until 1971. Mary previously worked for eight years for Triangle Raincoats/Weatherbee Coats from 1941 until 1949.

Mary was a member of the Holy Name of Jesus Church, and was well-known for walking on the west side, meeting and greeting friends along the way.

Mary leaves several dear friends throughout the Youngstown area.

Her brother, Stephen J. Janosik, is deceased.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. today, Nov. 13, at Kinnick Funeral Home, 477 N. Meridian Road, Youngstown.

Funeral services will begin on Friday at 9 a.m. at the funeral home and continue with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. at the Holy Name of Jesus Church, 613 N. Lakeview Ave., Youngstown.

Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Youngstown.

Helen A. Kurian, 76

AUSTINTOWN – Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church for Mrs. Helen A. Kurian, 76, who entered into rest early Wednesday at her home.

Helen was born April 7, 1932 in Youngstown, the daughter of the late Walter and Julia (Wielburda) Sulka.

She was a graduate of South High School and had been employed as a cosmetologist.

She was a member of the church and its Ladies Altar and Rosary Society.

Mrs. Kurian will be sadly missed by many, including her husband, Robert M. Kurian, whom she married Aug. 14, 1954; a son, Robert Kurian Jr. of Philadelphia; a daughter, Patricia (Charles) Esau of Youngstown; and her grandchildren; Carrie Rarick, Michael Esau, Nichole Danko, Robert Getsy and Rachael Kurian. She also leaves three great-grandchildren, Colette Rarick, and Julia and Randy Dillon.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Kathleen Getsy; a great-granddaughter, Hailey; a brother, Chester Sulka; a sister, Josephine Kubrin; and a daughter-in-law, Gail Kurian.

Bernice Yvonne March, 57

LIBERTY – Services will be Saturday, Nov. 15, 2008, at 11 a.m. at the Calvary Ministries International, for Mrs. Bernice Yvonne March, 57, who entered eternal rest on Monday, Nov. 10, 2008 at Forum Health Northside Medical Center.

Mrs. March was born Dec. 11, 1950 in Jenkin Jones, W.Va, a daughter of Leonard June. and Leoma Martin Boffman, coming to this area at an early age.

Mrs. March attended both West Virginia Schools and was a graduate of East High School. She had been employed with Penn Ohio Towel Supply, GM Lordstown, Reems Realty, Real Estate Center, ITT Technical Institute, Cleveland Call and Post as Ad Executive, entrepreneur of Something Kind of Different Clothing and Jewelry, and was an avid vender, attending all Black History Functions in Youngstown and around the country.

She was a member of Calvary Ministries International. She was a former president of Calvary Academy PTA and member of the Calvary Academy Boosters Club. She was also a member of the Ohio Board of Realtors and the Youngstown Club National Association of Negro Business and Professional Women’s Club, Inc.

Besides her mother, Leoma Martin Boffman, she leaves her beloved husband, Thomas G., whom she married Aug. 8, 1981; a daughter, Lesley Boffman (Ronald) Womack of Liberty; her stepson, Thomas C. March Jr. of Youngstown; two brothers, Leonard J. Boffman Jr. of Columbus and Benjamin Boffman of Dallas; two sisters, Gwendolyn Boffman of Dallas, and Lori Boffman of Youngstown; a grandson, Ronald E. Womack III. of Liberty; and a host of other family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her father, Leonard June Boffman; and a nephew, Andre D. Murray.

Amy Joy Marshall, 33

BOARDMAN – Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Kirila Funeral Home Inc. for Amy Joy Marshall, 33, who died Wednesday, Nov. 12, 2008, in her home.

She was born April 1, 1975 in Youngstown, a daughter of Dale L. Marshall Sr. and Carol J. Simione Marshall.

She was a graduate of Leonard Kurtz School and worked at the center on Javit Court in Austintown.

Surviving are mother, Carol J. Marshall of Boardman; father, Dale L. Marshall Sr.; brother, Dale L. Marshall II of Boardman; sister, Lorie (Lou) Yuhasz of Boardman; brother, Tim Marshall of Cleveland; and nieces, Jamie Yuhasz and Alex Yuhasz.

Friends will be received Saturday, Nov. 15, from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Kirila Funeral Home Inc., 258 Poland Ave. in Struthers.

Interment will follow at St. John Cemetery.

Amy was a sweet, special, loving person who will be deeply missed by all.

Miracle Joy McDonald

YOUNGSTOWN – Miracle Joy McDonald, passed away Monday, Nov. 3, 2008 at 5:13 p.m. at St. Elizabeth Health Center.

She was born Nov. 3, 2008, the daughter of Sylvia Jackson and Anthony McDonald.

Besides her parents, she leaves to mourn three grandparents, Marveene McDonald, Louise Jackson and Mary Jackson.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Akeanu Marie Jackson and grandfather, Roger McDonald.

Private services were held at the Sterling-McCullough Williams Funeral Home.

Leroy F. Ogilvie, 88


POLAND – Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at the Bethel Lutheran Church with the Reverend Bret Rizzo officiating, for Leroy F. Ogilvie, 88, who died Wednesday afternoon at Hospice House.

Leroy was born Nov. 8, 1920 in Youngstown, the son of David and Blanche Shaffer Ogilvie and had been a lifelong area resident.

He was a 1939 graduate of South High School. Leroy retired after 40 years in the Engineering Department at General Fireproofing. He served his country with the U.S. Air Corp during WWII, where he received the American Theater Ribbon, the Good Conduct Medal and the Victory Medal.

He leaves his wife, the former Evelyn Lundin, whom he married Aug. 29, 1940; a daughter-in-law, Jaclyn Ogilvie of Boardman; a sister, Norma Gill of Canfield; two grandchildren, D.J. (Toni) Ogilvie and Gwen (Dan) Pallante, both of Boardman; and eight great-grandchildren.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, David W. Ogilvie, who passed away May 23, 1988.

Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at the Fox Funeral and from noon to 1 p.m. Saturday at the Bethel Lutheran Church, 425 Crestview Drive in Boardman, one hour prior to the service.

Pauline Palumbo, 88

YOUNGSTOWN – There will be funeral services at 9:15 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 14, at the Rossi Brothers & Lellio Funeral Home, 4442 South Ave. in Boardman, followed by a 10 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Luke Church for Pauline Palumbo, 88, who passed away Tuesday morning, Nov. 11.

Pauline was born July 24, 1920 in Youngstown, the daughter of Frank and Christine (Amanda) Ferro.

Pauline’s greatest love was her family. She enjoyed cooking, baking and crocheting beautiful blankets for them.

Her husband, Carl Palumbo, whom she married Aug. 26, 1939, passed away Dec. 11, 1994, after 55 years of marriage.

She will always be remembered by her two daughters, Frances Furano of Youngstown and Dolores (Gene) Davidson of Maumee; her grandchildren, Frank (Louise) Furano of Houston, Pa., Carmela Schuster of Boardman, Carl (Sandy) Furano of Boardman, and Jason (Stacey) Davidson of Denver; her great-grandchildren, Rachael, Tara and Abby Schuster, and Kennedy Furano; a brother, Leonard Ferro; a brother-in-law, Paul Palumbo; sisters-in-law, Connie (James) Cataland, Mary Marzano, and Frances Saculla; and many nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her sisters, Phyllis DeFrank and Josephine Palumbo. Pauline will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Kenneth Preston, 81

CUYAHOGA FALLS – Kenneth Preston, 81, passed away Sunday, Nov. 9, 2008.

He was the son of Orlin and Geneva Preston.

Kenneth is survived by his wife of 61 years, Gladys Smith Preston; sister, June Schooley of Glendale, Ariz.; daughters, Geneva Preston of Cuyahoga Falls and Janet (Keith) Warnick of Ferndale, Mich.; son, Kenneth James (Patricia) of Canfield; grandchildren, Jaclyn Warnick of Adrian, Mich., Christine (Cliff) McDonough of Roseville, Mich., Airman Kenneth Russell Preston of Little Rock, Ark., John Virostko of Cincinnati, Alyssa Preston of Canfield and Stephanie Preston of Canfield; and great-grandchildren, Hailey and Cayden McDonough of Roseville.

Kenneth was very active in the community, working with the 4-H Youth Fair and serving with the Summit County Fair Board. He also enjoyed NASCAR and antique toys.

Friends may call Saturday, Nov. 15, from noon until the time of the service at 2 p.m. at the Bokas Funeral Home, 3653 W. Market St., Fairlawn, OH 44333. Entombment will follow at Rose Hill Burial Park with American Legion Post 281 providing military honors.

Phyllis A. Saunders, 69

YOUNGSTOWN – Phyllis A. Saunders, 69, passed away Monday, Nov. 10, 2008, at Hospice House in Poland.

She was born Sept. 26, 1939 in Youngstown, daughter of Anthony Fossaceca and Jeannie (Del Fraino) Fossaceca.

She was the wife of Frank Saunders, whom she married Oct. 8, 1966.

Family includes her husband, Frank Saunders of Youngstown; daughter, Sharon (Michael) Slivochka; sister, Rose Del Signore of Austintown; granddaughter, Hannah Slivochka; and granddaughter, Leah Slivochka.

She was preceded in death by her mother and father, and her brother, Sam Fossaceca.

She was a 1957 graduate of East High School. She was a homemaker, and a member of St. Christine Church. She also had a deep devotion to the Miraculous Medal Novena.

Her calling hours will be Friday from 11:30 a.m. to noon at St. Christines Church, where her funeral Mass will follow at noon at the church.

The family wishes to extend a special thanks to Dr. Malkovits for his deep devotion and care.

Lazaros Swetko, 78

YOUNGSTOWN – Funeral services will be held on Friday at 10 a.m. at the Vaschak-Kirila Funeral Home, for Mr. Lazaros Swetko, 78, who entered into rest Tuesday evening at St. Elizabeth Health Center in Boardman.

Lazaros was born March 14, 1930 in Orovo, Greece, the son of the late Thomas and Konstantina (Miovska) Svetko, coming from Poland in 1963.

He was the owner and operator of Duffy’s Tavern which opened in 1963 on Belmont Avenue on the city’s Northside, retiring in 1982.

He was an avid gardener and wine maker. He loved reading, especially the newspaper, and he enjoyed politics. He accomplished many things with losing his leg at a young age, but he never considered himself disabled.

He was of the Orthodox faith.

His wife, the former Christine Ilievska, whom he married Oct. 13, 1972, passed away Feb. 28, 2000.

Mr. Swetko will be sadly missed by many, including his son Alex and his fiancee, Lyndsay Marshall of Boardman; a daughter, Katherine Swetko of Youngstown; and a sister, Nikolina Arvanitopulu of Czechoslovakia.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Tina Arvanitopulu.

Elizabeth A. “Betty” Szabo, 75

YOUNGSTOWN – Private services were held Wednesday at the Poland United Methodist Church for Elizabeth A. “Betty” Szabo, 75, who passed away Saturday evening at St. Elizabeth Health Center.

Elizabeth was born Aug. 27, 1933 in Pittsburgh, a daughter of Dr. Andor and Elizabeth Bolla Leffler.

She married Elmer S. Szabo on March 27, 1954, and he passed away Oct. 14, 1970.

Elizabeth received her master’s degree from Kent State University in Ethnomusicology. She published articles in various national magazines and also published two books on Hungarian music.

Elizabeth was a former organist at the Hungarian Presbyterian Church, former director of the International Institute and served on the board, ran Magyar Marketing.com which is a Hungarian mail order business with over 10,000 customers.

She was also a fraternal director of the Wm. Penn Assoc. and a member of the local branch No. 28. Elizabeth was also the owner of the Paprika Cafe. She was proud and always promoting Hungarian ethnic awareness. Elizabeth was a member of the Youngstown American Hungarian Club and many other American Hungarian clubs throughout the country.

She is survived by three sons, Charles (Nancy) Szabo, Alan (Lori) Szabo and Ernie (Kim) Szabo; a daughter, Elizabeth (Don) Vos; and 11 grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Elmer.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Rich Center for Autism, the Youngstown American Hungarian Club or the Wm. Penn Scholarship Fund.

Interment was at Tod Homestead Cemetery.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Szabo & Sons Funeral Home.


Helen Techera, 101

CINCINNATI – Funeral services will be held on Friday at 10:30 a.m. at the Holy Trinity Romanian Orthodox Church for Mrs. Helen Techera, 101, who entered into rest Wednesday morning at Cottingham Retirement Home in Cincinnati.

Mrs. Techera was born Feb. 22, 1907 in Teline, Romania, a daughter of George and Elizabeth (Beces) Suciu, coming to Youngstown in 1928.

She was formerly a beauty operator and owned two beauty shops in Youngstown.

She belonged to the National Hairdresser Association and the AARP.

She was a member of the Holy Trinity Romanian Orthodox Church and its Ladies Auxiliary, Carmen Sylva, where she was a committee member and former delegate to the National ARFORA Convention. She was a member of the Unirea and Plugarul Society and its Ladies Auxiliary, where she was a committee member and auditor. She was also a member of the FDR Pensioners Cub.

She previously held membership in the Ioan Podea Society and was president of its Elena Podea Ladies Auxiliary.

Her husband, Zacharie Techera, whom she married in Romania, June 4, 1928, died June 28, 1974.

She leaves a son, Titus Z. Techera; two grandsons, Andrew and Jason; and many nieces and nephews in Romania.

Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, Emil Suciu; and three sisters, Mary Mihai, Frosina Boholt, and Atilia Beces.
