Father's Day
History
The origin of Father's Day dates back 98 years.
Father's Day after attending a Mother's Day service. Dodd wanted to honor her own father, William Smart, who was a Civil War veteran and reared six children after his wife died in childbirth.
1910: On June 19, the first Father's Day is observed in Spokane, Wash. The mayor of Spokane and the governor of Washington officially support the event.
1924: President Calvin Coolidge supports the idea of a national holiday for Father's Day.
1956: Congress passes a joint resolution recognizing Father's Day.
1966: President Lyndon Johnson proclaims Father's Day to be an official national holiday.
1972: President Richard Nixon signs into law a permanent U.S. Father's Day to be observed on the third Sunday of June.
