Local company to make pipe for Alaska line
YOUNGSTOWN V&M Star Steel, with operations here and in Houston, has received a contract to provide 30,000-35,000 feet of high strength, seamless line pipe for BP's Prudhoe Bay, Alaska, pipeline operations.
BP has announced plans to replace approximately 16 miles of oil transit lines at Prudhoe Bay, and has completed placing orders for new pipe segments, according to information posted on www.oilonline.com, an online oil industry information newsletter.
Telephone calls to V&M officials in Youngstown were not returned.
V&M, formerly North Star Steel, is at 2669 Martin Luther King Blvd. According to the Regional Chamber, V&M has 430 full-time employees.
V&M, a division of Vallourec & Mannesmann Tubes, has agreed to adjust current operating schedules in both its Houston and Youngstown facilities to make and prepare the pipe for delivery to BP in Houston by mid-September.
The process will begin in Youngstown with steel and pipe-making. The pipe will then be shipped to Houston for final processing, which includes heat treatment, inspection and end finishing.
BP will independently arrange transportation of the pipe from Houston to Prudhoe Bay.
