Cafaro gift to honor Betty Nohra
A student center will be named after Betty Nohra, wife of a former Cafaro executive.
YOUNGSTOWN Youngstown State University has received a $100,000 gift from Anthony and Phyllis Cafaro to improve technology and laboratory facilities in the nursing department.
"This key gift from the Cafaro family will help upgrade the facilities in one of the fastest growing programs on campus," said Dr. David C. Sweet, YSU president.
The gifts are part of an initiative led by Phyllis Cafaro to improve the scope and facilities of YSU's nursing program.
Enrollment in the program has more than tripled in the last five years, from 92 students in 2000 to 355 in 2005. The bachelor of science in nursing program boasts a 95 percent graduation rate, with 97 percent of graduates finding in-state employment within six months of graduation.
In recognition of the Cafaro gift, the new student resource center in the nursing department will be named in honor of Betty Nohra, who died earlier this month. She is the wife of Joseph S. Nohra, former YSU trustee and retired long-time chief financial officer for the Cafaro Corp.
"The Cafaro family is so pleased to make this contribution to the nursing school in memory of Betty Nohra," the Cafaros said.
The gift will create a 24-carrel virtual computer lab, where faculty will be able to conduct virtual clinical sessions using micro-simulators and where students can practice virtual clinical skills using the latest software.
Betty Nohra graduated from the Youngstown Hospital School of Nursing in 1957 as a registered nurse.
Upon graduation she worked for two years at Sloan Kettering cancer research center in New York, returning to Youngstown in 1959 as a private-duty nurse. The Nohras have eight children, all of whom attended YSU.
