7 Ohio institutions fostering regional entrepreneurs

CLEVELAND — Seven Northeast Ohio institutions of higher learning have banded together to teach tomorrow's entrepreneurs and get more students interested in entrepreneurship.

The goal is to develop young, smart entrepreneurs who will remain in the region to form new enterprises and boost the economy by creating new jobs.

Entrepreneurship centers at Kent State University, the University of Akron, Cleveland State University, Ashland University, Baldwin-Wallace College, Case Western Reserve University and John Carroll University are collaborating to form the Entrepreneurship Education Consortium.

The consortium will hold its first program, "Entrepreneurship Immersion for Undergraduates," Aug. 12-17 at Cleveland State University. It will be an intensive, one-week academic experience limited to 35 undergraduate students.

Students will attend two academic sessions a day on such topics as developing a business idea and exploring innovation and creativity. The program will also provide various networking opportunities with prominent Northeast Ohio entrepreneurs. Faculty from all seven schools, as well as some local entrepreneurs, will serve as instructors.

Students will also team together to create a practical business concept as part of a competition. The group with the best business concept, as determined by a judging panel, will receive a cash award.

Junior and senior students from various majors at all seven schools were recruited for the program. All tuition, room, board, fees and textbooks are provided, along with a stipend, by the Burton D. Morgan Foundation.
