The Mustangs have been in the midst of their most successful stretch in school history over the past five years, with two league titles and a playoff berth since 2004. But Jim Parry left the program after last year's 6-4 season and Pierson takes over a young team in the midst of a rebuilding year. Just two starters, and five letterwinners, return and Mathews will need to find replacements for 2,000-yard rusher Brent Jackson, All-Ohioan Jeff Betts (DL) and four-year starter Mike Gibbs (OL/DL). Junior tailback Wade Pruitt, a 500-yard rusher, will anchor the offensive and defensive backfields. The key will be surviving the early schedule before league play begins.
